Venezuela fall back on a reliable scapegoat(Going after the Jews)

I picked an exciting week to visit Venezuela. The night before my arrival, the regime seized the country’s largest shopping mall. The day after, Israeli authorities disclosed that a recently intercepted shipment of missiles to Hezbollah had originated in Venezuela.

These two dissimilar events are importantly related. The seized mall belonged to one of Venezuela’s wealthiest Jewish families. Following an armed attack on the country’s most visible synagogue in January 2009, the seizure sent a strong message: None of you are safe.

Which reminds me, that a silver lining in this developing financial turmoil is that many extraneous government programs may get the ax (Legal Services Administration, Corporation for Public Broadcasting) in order to maintain some funding for more valuable areas (old age pension commitments, Public Health Efforts, etc.).

I was referring to Obama. To me, virtually every phrase in his call to arms against “the bankers” could have been taken from Hitler’s writings, the screams of various mullahs, or the rants of Jeremiah Wright.

He didn’t use the word “Jews,” but I thought he was trying to evoke that image. I’m not Jewish, btw, so I’m not hypersensitive on this subject. But that was how I heard it.

I’m not sure I would see this as ‘going after the Jews’ just yet; it sounds more ad hoc, more like targets of opportunity - supply and dictatorial demand. Still, it should be watched very, very closely.
