Obama Called For Jury Duty; Told Court 'Would Not Be Able To Serve'
Politics Daily/Woman Up ^ | January 23, 2010 | Lynn Sweet

President Barack Obama was called to jury duty at a southwest suburban Chicago courthouse, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. But the White House said Saturday that the president notified the Cook County Circuit Court that "he would not be able to serve."

Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reported that Obama's jury duty summons was sent to his home on the South Side of Chicago asking him to report on Monday at the county courthouse in the suburb of Bridgeview. The White House said the court was told weeks ago - no surprise - that Obama could not make it.

This isn't the first time a president has been called to serve on a jury. Former President George W. Bush in 2006 got a jury summons from McLennan County, Texas, where his ranch is located, but he was let off the hook, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

The Christian Science Monitor reported in 2006 that "in fact, no modern court has had a sitting president on a jury. Ronald Reagan came the closest when he was summoned in the 1980s by Santa Barbara County, Calif. He was granted a deferment until he was out of office.'

Former President Bill Clinton was willing to serve on a case involving a gang-related shooting when he was called in 2003, but the judge dismissed him.

Most of us hold him in contempt.....maybe the court will, too.

Well, I understand his reluctance considering he hasn’t been serving anything or anyone for the past year.

In Chicago, if you are called, you show up. Or else.

He better get a note from his employer (Soros) to get out of ‘duty’.

Kind of off topic, but I’m 46, have been a registered voter since the age of 18, lived in five states, both in rural and urban environs and never once have I been called to jury duty.

I wouldn’t want the bum in my jury, either.

Besides, it’s SUPPOSED to be, “A jury of,” one’s, “Peers.”

The Great O has no peers. Just ask him.

I wasn’t called until I became disabled. 35 years on the job and not once did they call me to serve.

Well, sit STILL for a minute and maybe you’ll get your chance, LOL! Runnin’ from the Ex-wives? ;)

I’ve served twice. It was incredibly interesting, but they were simple civic cases. My Dad served on a murder trial. He literally had nightmares for months afterwards; the crime was horrific, the evidence gruesome.

Maybe we should count our blessings? ;)

Truly bizarre. My Dad served five times in 20 years; my wife three times in 10 years.
