A group of government agencies led by Kent Police has commissioned arms manufacturer BAE systems to adapt military-style planes for civilian use.
The consortium aims to have the drones operating in British skies in time for the 2012 Olympics.
The revelations are likely to prompt 'Big Brother' accusations from civil libertarians.
CCTV in the sky: Unmanned drones, similar to this Force Protection Airborne Surveillance plane, are set to be used in the UK
According to a report published in the Guardian, a prototype drone equipped with high-powered cameras and sensors will take to the skies for test flights later this year.
BAE Systems and Kent police reportedly claim that the drones would 'greatly extend' the government's surveillance capacity and 'revolutionise policing.'
The Civil Aviation Authority is currently reluctant to license UAVs in normal airspace because of the risk of collisions with other aircraft, but adequate 'sense and avoid' systems for drones are only a few years away.

Well, crap, that takes the thrill out of Saturday afternoon. I suppose now I am going to have to go scoop snow and break ice.
there are cameras all over the place in the UK, they have vans with cameras on and at first during the 80’s the Govt said it was to secure just city centres and the underground.
Now they’re everywhere

When seconds count the police are only minutes away.
If they use those skills here, hopefully it will be focused on Washington, especially the Capitol and White House.
Kind of like Irish Elk , only smaller .
Yes you are right , no .
I think that 4-5 good riflemen could bring one of them down.
I bet they operate pretty high . Maybe a pumpkin gun at the end of the runway . I think the penalty will be even more severe than that for shooting a Whooping Crane .
Governement around the world has reached a level of total insanity. We have a responsibility as US citizens to see that this does not happen here, or hold accountable those who would promote it.
We have to stand up to the government or we are going to be nothing but slaves to them.
They say that like it's a good thing.
Not to mention that several of them can at least spell "Constitution", and a decent percentage would find such a mission repugnant and might fsck it over from within.
The social contract is so close to broken , I can not think of a thing more important than standing up to these wanna-be tyrants . When you are faced with life or death , far worse than jumping the gun is starting too late .
