Obama Calls out Contractor Tax Cheats
January 20, 2010 12:12 PM
From Sunleen Miller:
Calling out deadbeat companies that are being awarded government contracts while delinquent in their taxes, President Obama today signed a presidential memorandum to stop these companies from collecting government contracts while they are gaming the system.
In a time of great need, when our families and our nation are finding it necessary to tighten our belts, and be more responsible with how we spend our money, we cant afford to waste taxpayer dollars, Obama said from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building this morning, And we especially cant afford to let companies game the system. We need to make sure every tax dollar we spend is going to address our nations urgent needs and to make a difference in the lives of our people.
The President said that the total amount owned in unpaid taxes by companies is estimated at more than $5 billion. Allowing this, he said, is not only inefficient and wasteful but its simply wrong, for companies to take taxpayer dollars and not be taxpayers themselves.
By issuing this directive, all of us in Washington will be required to be more responsible stewards of your tax dollars, the president said, All across this country, there are people who meet their obligations each and every day. You do your jobs. You support your families. You pay the taxes you owe because its a fundamental responsibility of citizenship.
The memorandum signed today directs the OMB, Treasury and other federal agencies to take steps to block these companies from receiving new government contracts. It also directs the IRS to conduct a review of the overall accuracy of companies claims about their tax delinquencies.

LOL! Wouldn’t that be a “teachable moment”!
As far as I am concerned, the whole damned government’s a “deadbeat company”!!!
The empty suit scolding anyone on this is laughable. Look at your appointments zero, before pointing the finger at anyone else.
What an idiot.
With all that he has appointed that have been tax cheats???
This is insanity, and I do mean to imply a mental imbalance!
Just because the IRS says you owe, doesn’t make it so.
Half of his adminstration are freaking tax cheats. Does anyone there know how stupid this sounds!!!!
He'd best not push this thing too far eh.
As far as I am concerned, the whole damned governments a deadbeat company!!!
Notice he doesn’t mention the thirty million owed by congress critters “in back taxes”. Then add all the Czars, 32 as I recall, and you have a good piece of change.
What a lieing piece of S&it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go tell it on the Welfare Mountain. What a hypocrite.
Rangel(chair of ways and means committee), Daschle, Geitner (the head of the freaking IRS for crying out loud), that loud bang you just heard was my head exploding!
This sound reasonable. However, it raises questions. How does the GSA and other government agencies paying the bills to companies for service FIND OUT that they are delinquent in their taxes? The IRS information is supposed to be secret.
The IRS, if it wants can go to court and slap liens on assets and income. But a bill that did so directly would be a bill of attainder, and would be unconstitutional.
The government could refuse to award contracts I guess to companies who were known to be delinquent, but they can’t withhold payment for services rendered without a judicial finding of fact.
It could be that the IRS is wrong about what a company owes, for example.
To see the disaster this could be: Imagine if Obama announced that no federal employee would get a paycheck if they were not up-to-date on their taxes? It would be the same thing, not paying for services rendered.
You think the SEIU would support him?
