The baby koala affectionately known as Doug has died after being shot with an air rifle north of Brisbane this week.
The male joey had been on life support at the Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast, after he and his mother were found on Tuesday with slug gun wounds at Morayfield.
The joey, who was months old and weighed only one kilogram, died late this afternoon on an operating table.
He had also been suffering from pneumonia and was on oxygen because of the poor condition of his lungs.
Yesterday vets said the koala was expected to make a full recovery.
Police and the RSPCA are still looking for the person responsible for the attack.

Aww, that’s sad. Poor little guy. I have a question: I thought a joey was a baby kangaroo.
This kind of stuff really chaps my hide.
apparently any infant marsupial is a “joey”
so i guess baby opossums are joeys!
I was curious about the term also. Looks like it's from an aboriginal term meaning simply "baby"; usually applied to kangaroo, wallaby, or possum, but also a young child. Must be like the American term "kid".
People who do this sort of thing, whether to cats, dogs, or koalas ... well, one has to wonder if those people have souls.
What a pity!

(Also, to those not familiar with Australian fauna, Koalas, although seemingly cuddly, can get rather nasty if irritated- and they do have claws- really sharp claws!)

Anyone that would shoot that cute little guy with an air rifle is a danger to everyone....sociopath is my guess.
Because these people are bottom of the scum. There are not enough bad words for them.
Poor little tyke. He did nothing to deserve this and neither did his mother. I hope they find the creeps who did that and shoot them with an air gun..see how they like it!

An Australian koala-keeper occassionally posts on a board I frequent. She says that one of her charges will sometimes feign sore feet so she will pick him up and hug him!
Whomever hurt these animals should be shot with an air rifle and left to bleed out.
