U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., holds a 22-point lead over former U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth in a potential Republican primary this year for McCain’s seat.
A Rasmussen Reports poll released Friday gives McCain 53 percent and Hayworth 31 percent among GOP primary voters.
Hayworth, a former sportscaster who became a U.S. representative from Scottsdale, now is a conservative radio commentator on KFYI-AM 550 in Phoenix.
McCain is seeking a fifth term in the U.S. Senate after losing the 2008 presidential race. Hayworth takes a tougher line on immigration than McCain, who favors a guest worker program.
The survey, conducted this month, included 502 likely primary voters.
McCain has taken a stronger stance against President Barack Obama on health care and the economy this week since a Republican won the U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts.
The Arizona Republican said Obama should have focused more on jobs and the economy and less on health care reform. He told CNN on Thursday that Obama has not called him for cooperation on any issue since the new president took office last year.
Hayworth has not yet decided whether to run for Senate, and no major Democrat is in the race for McCain’s seat.

Plenty of time to turn this thing around. Just look at Scott Brown’s campaign. That is what needs to be done for JD. I will be donating to JD’s campaign and nary a penny to the RNC.
A little over 3 weeks ago Coakley led Brown by 30 points in some polls.
I would think if he were going to run, he would’ve announced by now. Instead, he asks everyone to wait until the end of his program for an important announcement. I think this means he won’t run! Otherwise, he would’ve thrown his hat in the ring by now and wouldn’t announce his candidacy on his radio program. I could be wrong, but, its what it sounds like to me.
I will relish in the day his title is Former Senator John McCain
I keep reading posts on here using the words, old, etc. This smacks of ageism. And, for the record, the word is aisle - not isle.
McCain will be there as long as Byrd, unless Providence intervenes.
Incumbency is difficult to beat, especially by someone from within the same party.
McCain has too many old politicial ties.
He didn't suddenly become stupid.
Just goes to prove: “You can fool some of the people all of the time but you can also dupe most people all of the time.”

The battle has not yet been engaged. This report is akin to cavalry riding out and flashing sabers. It is exercise for the horses
