AZ-Sen. 2010: AZ Sen Poll: McCain Opens Primary Lead (over Hayworth) (thanks a lot, Sarah)
Real Clear Politics / Rasmussen ^ | 2010-01-22

Posted on 01/22/2010 8:02:15 AM PST by rabscuttle385

Sen. John McCain (R) has known from an early stage that he could face a tough primary in his bid for re-election this year, and acted on it. He already launched radio ads touting his effort to block President Obama's "extreme left wing crusade." And just this week, Sen.-elect Scott Brown (R) recorded robocalls that went out to voters in Arizona.

Now, a Rasmussen poll (502 LVs, 1/20, MoE +/- 4.5%) shows the Maverick just over 50 percent in a potential matchup against former Rep. JD Hayworth -- not the best position for an incumbent to be, but an improvement over the dead heat Rasmussen found in November.

Primary Election Matchup
McCain 53 (+8 vs. last poll, 11/18)
Hayworth 31 (-12)
Simcox 4 (unch)
Und 8 (+1)

Agreed. Sarah needs to get the message loud and clear.

It is a waste of time to attack John McCain. It is a waste of our resources. He is with us in opposition to Obama. Let us focus on knocking off real ideological liberals like Mark Kirk.

if "no one is running against him", then why does he suddenly need Sarah? That question MUST be asked!

She is really dirtying herself with this one, and now McCain's wife & daughter's attempt to raise sh!t in CA --we the people here have voted on 8, Cindy, butt out! --Sarah now is really stepping in the McNastty sh!tpile!!

Why because she isn’t stupid. Why in the hell would we want to replace McCain with a candidate involved in the Jack Abramhoff scandal? I can understand going Simcox but Hayworth never was a star of the party. Let us not waste our resources attacking our own. We could reserve our angst to defeating the likes of true Ideological liberals like Mark Kirk who is set to fill Obama’s old seat at a time ripe for a more conservative candidate. I’m not worried about McCain but if Kirk fills Obama’s seat then it will be a huge loss for Tea Party and Conservatives. McCain has been a pain in the ass but he is loyal to our cause as is Sarah and we can be thankful in some ways that he did not win. The liberal spectacle of Obama was exactly what this country needed.

Really?

Let us focus on knocking off real ideological liberals like Mark Kirk.

Mark Kirk only voted for cap-and-trade.

McCain helped write the original legislation.

Thanks for valuable links! Many people do not realize how powerful certain people are behind the scenes.

Stumping for McCain isn't "deserting principles"...Palin is a politician and realizes that she needs Republican establishment to forward her career...it's naive to think otherwise. Here's the thing: there will ALWAYS be an establishment. No exceptions. There is butt to kiss, contacts that have to be made, relationships to make. Do you think Reagan could have ever been President without doing all those things?

Besides, if not Palin, where do conservatives go? Jim Demint? Huckabee? I'm not ready to bail yet...Romney is working damned hard ... we've got to keep up the pace...magritte

I guess that is what McJuan counts on--he will draw conservative support thru Sarah (even though at present there's no official opposition.) Do you stop to think maybe something more sinister is at work? That he would like nothing better than to destroy her AND divide conservatives? Regain the ground the GOP is losing, fast? And work to help mitt Romney in his quest for '12?

Yes, the insiders are rich, powerful & connected and we are the underdogs. Revolutions have happened before, right? But not by giving up. That is simply defeat. Dhimmitude.

Plenty of time left. Sarah is showing up now, which is way out in political time. She knows but I think she has to be this way due to her VP run with the goofball.

Good post.....for the reasons you mentioned I am moved to once more assume she is not going to run. Rather she is doing exactly what she wants in moving Rebublican canidates along..and their supporters. She’s assisting in shaping the party. Mcain, unfortunately, is simply pay back and how it works.

If I look at her decisions from this prospective..this makes good sense. Although I really believe McCain needs to retire..yesturday.

I looked at the link and saw nothing that indicated she is responsible for poll numbers cited here.

Don’t editorialize without evidence. Unless I missed it then please cite it.

It still wouldn’t matter. Until J.D. actually indicates he’ll declare none of this means anything. Just people fighting for the sake of fighting. Without a challenge from him what we have here is Palin endorsing...a man who will win either way.

IF J.D. actually declares, and I’m starting to lose hope he will, then it’s a different ball game.

Hayworth is fading because he hasn’t announced yet.

Bingo. If he's going to challenge an incumbant Senator, he had better hurry up and decide. I'm not a McCain hater, but his time has come and gone. It's time for new, more conservative leadership.

If this was 1980 half of this thread would be screaming, “Reagan is a RINO”, cause 41 was his VP.

“McCain is going to win and everyone knows this... so gathering some political capital for herself is no big deal...”

Problem with this theory is that you’re assuming it doesn’t matter if we support moderate RINOs over conservatives, and it certainly does...all else equal it’s always better to drive the discussion as far as possible toward reducing government and increasing freedom - even if McLame wins and goes on to contend an idiot RAT.

Given your theory that ‘everyone’ knows some such thing will happen, so what does it matter if...we’d have never seen the MA miracle Tuesday.

“Hayworth lost his Congressional seat in 2006. Why does he deserve to be a United States Senator at this time? I personally would vote against him.”

Hayworth held his seat for 6 terms before losing in 2006 (like a lot of Republicans, with the national malaise over Bush, spending and war going on...)

That means he won 6 out of 7 contests...so why the long face about him?

Nothing more sinister than McCain wanting to get re-elected...

No one has said "give up"...but this isn't a situation where you can storm the gates and overrun the castle...the moat is too deep...we have to work our intrigue inside the castle, and pick off one at a time..Virginia, New Jersey, MA...patience grasshopper ! magritte

“If this was 1980 half of this thread would be screaming, “Reagan is a RINO”, cause 41 was his VP.”

And the thing of it is, the proof is in the pudding. We saw Reagan execute on conservative values...and way less so Bush 1 who raised taxes against a promise not to..

We’ve also seen McLame’s weak record - no doubt on his RINO status, hey?

What’s wrong with calling a spade a spade? Or at least discussing what’s the meaning of RINO and why it matters...and what we can do about it.

One thing we can do about it is support Conservatives - Whether you’re Sarah Palin, or any of us who claim the Conservative, freedome loving banne - especially and maybe principally in the primary season - as that entire effort will drive the conversation toward freedom, smaller government principles - even for the RINO involved, and they’ll be forced to identify themselves and make known what they think, maybe even make promises that we can hold them to later (should they prevail in the primary).

Tell me, Cap’n, does Sarah decide who wins in AZ or do the voters?

Of course not. And why is this supposed to rationalize Sarah's support for McCain?

Lets put it this way: IF she support Rubio in Florida (and word is that she will eventually) and other conservatives and tea-party affiliated candidates this year for the November election, making speeches about common sense conservatism and just supporting McCain, her running mate......does that make her a betrayal or an RINO?

NO it does not, it’s a disappointment on one aspect, it’s not perfect, as no one person is perfect; but it’s not going to make you not pull that lever down for her, if it comes down to Sarah vs Obama;

she said that she was keeping her promise obviously to McCain to her detriment but can we also say that might keep her promise to support conservatives in 2010? you betcha!
++++++++++++++++++

I said earlier, I thought she was probably 2 for 3 in Perry, Bachmann and McLame. I also suggested in post #110 a strategy she could have employed with McLame while still maintaining her promises to all the rest of us conservatives out here.

I’m not suggesting Sarah is perfect, nor that she can be perfectly conservative. I’m not making judgment calls about her at this juncture. But I think that she lost an opportunity to nuance this in a (much) better way, and am pointing that out.

Yes, I agree that it’s a disappointment - for one that appears to have really great political instincts, almost helped Hoffman win as an independent conservative in NY23 and has provided with Demint, Rush, Beck and others a great counterpoint to the socialist child king in the WH.

So, imho, she’s 2 for 3 - good in baseball - mebbe not so good in gymnastics and politics...although bammy’s like 0 for 100...:)

Hopefully she supports Rubio, but if Rubio, then why not stay out of AZ til after the primary. That’s just baffling to me. Loyalty to him aside, what about loyalty to conservatives?

I think Sarah’s loyalty should be:
God
Family
Freedom/conservativism/Country
Political allies (McCain)

I think she got 3 and 4 mixed up. But she’s not perfect and I’m hoping she’ll raise her average...
