U.S. beer sales volumes fell 2.2% last year, the highest rate since the 1950s, with demand worsening late in the year in a sign of the pressures on big brewers to make their mergers pay off.
The decline, the industry's first since 2003, raises demands for industry leaders Anheuser-Busch InBev NV and MillerCoors LLC to come up with better advertising and to rethink recent price increases, said retailers and analysts.
But they must tread carefully, balancing price moves against a need to drive profits in the wake of the mergers that created the two.
The two giants increased prices by about 5% last year, fresh off InBev NV's acquisition of Anheuser-Busch Cos. and the move by SABMiller PLC and Molson Coors Brewing Co. to combine U.S. operations. Those increases, along with a weak job market and lackluster advertising, contributed to the sales drop, industry analysts said....
Anheuser, the maker of Bud Light, posted a 2.1% decline in shipments last year, its biggest drop since 1976, according to preliminary research by Beer Marketer's Insights. MillerCoors, which produces Coors Light and Blue Moon, had a 1.9% drop. Large suppliers specializing in imported beers fared worse, with Crown Imports LLC, importer of Corona, showing a 5% drop. The small-batch "craft" beer industry continued to represent an industry bright spot, with the biggest among the craft brewers, Boston Beer Co., showing a 1.7% increase.

Ok, I don't care much for other beers. Shoot me.
Give me Falstaff or Piels, the cartoon commericals I mean.
Oh my yes. When you do the volumes I do (300 gallons a year) kegging is the only real option.
Once you start kegging, you will look back and wonder why you ever bottled.
The time factor alone is worth it to me.

While stationed in Germany(59-62)I was amazed at the Germans love for room temp beer. They actually had a device that looked something like a curling iron that they would put into the beer in the winter(beer storage was outside and of course the beer was cold in the winter)in order to bring it up to room(or close)temps. Gasthaus owners were not pleased that they had to go out of the way to make the beer cold in the summer for the GIs. Because of that I can, at my advanced age, drink room temp beer, if it is a good beer. Unlike some on this thread I consider Sam Adams a good beer, especially their Summer Ale. I think it is over priced however and so am constantly looking for good tasting beer with a lower price. BTW German beer, at least when I was there, was far superior to most American brands at that time and probably still are.
Ha ha, the Ruination alcohol is 7.7%,
but the IBU (International Bitterness Unit),
which measures hops is 100%. - Cheers!

Guess I’ll try it, just so’s I can say I did...
100% or 100 IBU?
I suspect the latter rather than the former :)
Trying to drink 100% hops would be, well, drinking hops !
Regardless, a 100 IBU beer is an Alpha Acid explosion !

Do you remember the old ads with the old cowboy saying that “he remembered Henry Wienhards they were a short horn breed out of Texas”, or something similar. It’s not a bad beer actually but I haven’t seen it for sale in CA for quite some time.
What are the rest of you doing? I'm keeping up my consumption of beer.
Beer sales are down because obama is prez. All the teenagers are smoking pot instead of drinking beer.
Thanks! They just called it “Henry’s” when we ordered. It was a fine brew.
I just checked an outlet around here that has over 500 beers in stock and they don’t carry it. I remember that the people in Portland told me that it is so popular, they don’t export it. I can confirm that as I have never seen it on a menu on the East coast.
Perfect timing on that one! LOL :)
To add my own comments re: beer...
I’m not a huge fan. Used to drink a lot of it when I was college-aged, going to parties with my (now) husband. Never really got back into drinking beer after I got pregnant with my first and it made me sick to even smell it — that happened with all four of my kids, BTW. When I got pregnant with our third I was waitressing - you can probably imagine how unpleasant that was for me serving pitchers, and trying not to gag! LOL
In HS (not that I partied a LOT, mind you), and at all the parties after HS, the beer of choice for our age-group was usually Miller Genuine Draft...
I liked the Sam Adams Lager I had out in CA in 2000 — I don’t remember the exact name... I think it was a special *flavor* if I’m not mistaken.
Anyway, the only beer I’ve really liked in a long time is the Leinenkugel’s Honey Weiss we finally tried earlier this year. For the first time in my life I think I found a beer I’d actually drink by choice! LOL
[I’m usually more of a jack & coke girl, or *Foo-Foo* drinks depending upon my mood (like a buttery nipple - a drink not the shot, or Mai Tais)! LOL I’ve also been known to drink tequila, but it’s been a long time since I’ve done that... The hard stuff is too expensive for us right now! LOL]
Man, talking about this it occurs to me that it’s been a really LONG time since my husband and I have gone out... I need to arrange a date night! I think we’ll visit the “micro-brewery” a couple blocks away — it’s nice when you don’t have to worry about driving home! :)
After two decades of serious beer exploration, I've finally settled on a brew. They don't come any better than Duvel.
