Federal immigration officials predict that up to 200,000 Haitians could apply for Temporary Protected Status, which would keep them from being deported. Applications will be accepted starting Thursday.

The Obama administration is preparing to handle applications from as many as 200,000 undocumented Haitian immigrants who want to live and work legally in the United States under a new immigration program unveiled last week in the aftermath of Haiti's destructive earthquake.
The federal government will begin accepting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) applications on Thursday, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Alejandro Mayorkas, whose agency will process the paperwork.
Mayorkas was in Miami Wednesday to meet with local immigrant aid groups to South Florida to talk about the daunting task of handling the likely blizzard of applications from Haitians seeking the opportunity to remain in the United States.
Administration officials approved TPS for Haitians last week as part of an effort to help Haiti recover from the earthquake that left an estimated 200,000 people dead and about 1.5 million homeless.
The TPS designation is reserved for selected undocumented migrants from countries disrupted by natural disasters, armed conflicts or other emergencies.
Those Haitians approved will be allowed to stay in the United States for 18 months and be issued work permits to find jobs.
To be approved, Haitian immigrants must submit proof of Haitian citizenship and must show they were in the United States before Jan. 12 -- the day the devastating earthquake struck Haiti.

Of coarse we want to continue to help the earthquake victims of Haiti - but these people are not earthquake victims! They are illegal aliens who have broken the laws of our nation, and were not even in Haiti during the earthquake.
The article even says they have to "prove" they were not in Haiti during the earthquake, and then they are rewarded for breaking our immigration laws?
Again, they are not "migrants" as the title says - they are illegals.
This is a pure political decision by Obama and his corrupt thugs.
Moreover, since Haiti needs so much help and re-building, why are these people not being sent back to help their own nation during its time of greatest need?
Incredible.
I would deport every single one of them.
“Me papers in Port au Prince, Mon”
OK - approved. And here’s your SSI, food stamp, MEDICAID and voter registration packet. Welcome to America.
If the jobs ever come back they belong to AMERICANS!
START FLOODING THE INBOXES OF EVERY POLITICIAN YOU CAN FIND!
This should outrage Americans, but I doubt it will.
Obama is using this tragedy (just as Rush Limbaugh predicted he would) for his own political ends.
Giving these illegals status just because they were not in Haiti during the earthquake makes as much sense as giving Mexicans free healthcare because they decided to cross the border to enter an American hospital Emergency Room for a routine checkup.
Jobs? Who said anything about jobs?
Maybe we can swap unemployed Americans going over to all those shovel ready jobs in Haiti, for indigent Haitians coming here.
Well, at least Florida has the Castle Doctrine...last thing we need is groups of Haitian machete gangs roving the streets
“The latest estimate shows that Haitian immigrants in the United States send more than $1 billion in remittances to Haiti, according to the Inter-American Development Bank, which closely tracks remittances.”
That’s one billion dollars our fellow countrymen aren’t getting.
They had no intention of deporting them in the first place. Now the left has a phony excuse.
And nobody has the will or spine to do anything about it other than complain.
Great. I guess I can expect a bunch of these 3rd worlders to begin showing up here in Atlanta soon. Like we need anymore here. Sheeeeesh.
Nice. Why, what skill set other than breaking the law have they demonstrated?
call your Congress critter to object, quickly.
Reading the comments section after the article, the residents down there are of the same mind.
Like another poster said, all people will do is complain. At some point, the folks in those affected areas are going to have to take to the street to get the politicians to listen to them.
Just fired off an e-mail to Crissy!!!
I hope he will receive many more???
That is a lot of Democrat voters.
WELCOME TO HOUSTON !
Come on.Don’t you know yet how Obama works? He had a choice between:
a) a rapid response ( to his mind,Imperialistic)military response that would have secured Port au Prince and delivered immediate military security and aid within 48 hours.
b) the kumbayah UN aid model with a conglomeration of aid agencies that will fight with the US military rather that
deliver stockpiled aid, AKA, the UN AID GOAT F_CK ( UNAGF).The UNAGF lines the pockets of crooks and organized crime in any country it “helps.”The people mostly starve and the aid agencies do mock protests about the barbaric nature of the testosterone driven natives, while simultaneously denigrating and interfering with military assistance.
Guess which model of aid Obama chose? Buahahahahahahahah!
Ask yourself: WHY?
You got to know how Obama works by now!
HINT1: ( the aid is designed not to work so that an emergency alternative will have to be invoked by Obama.)
HINT2: ( If you have to read hint 2 , you are either naive or dumber than dirt, but we take mercy on you in either case: I give you this word array: immigrant, refugees,votes,1 million, settle in red states)

Temporary Protected Status - Haiti
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary, Janet Napolitano, has determined that an 18-month designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti is warranted because of the devastating earthquake and aftershocks which occurred on January 12, 2010. As a result, Haitians in the United States (and other individuals without nationality who last habitually resided in Haiti) are unable to return safely to their country. DHS will continue to work with other branches of the United States Government to closely monitor developments in Haiti to determine the need for additional action.
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will efficiently and timely process immigration applications** for TPS filed by nationals of Haiti. Further detailed information will be posted in the Federal Register Notice announcing the Secretarys decision to designate Haiti. DHS estimates that approximately 100,000 to 200,000 individuals will be eligible for TPS.
** Couldnt be any clearer. Green Cards and the vote.
And all that vacant housing in Tampa waiting to be sold. Can you read my lips. More affirmative action mortgages to ruin America further. People are slow on the up take here. LOL.And Obama is blaming greedy bankers instead of Fannie/Freddie? Buahahahahahahahahaha!
