After more than five years of waiting, the American State Department has decided, in a document signed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to lift the ban that prohibited me (as well as Professor Adam Habib from South Africa) from entering the United States. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)—which, along with the American Academy for Religion, the American Association of University Professors and the PEN American Center had taken legal action against the American government—has hailed the decision is “a major victory for civil liberties” in the United States.”

Clinton signed orders which ended the ban on Professor Tariq Ramadan of Oxford University, who was barred due to alleged terrorism ties which he denies, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said on Wednesday.

He added that the ban had also been lifted for Adam Habib of Johannesburg University, another prominent Muslim scholar.

"As we look at it, we do not think that either one of them represents a threat to the United States," Crowley told a news briefing, adding that the U.S. government hoped to encourage more interaction with the Muslim world.

Great to see the STATE Department vetting terrorism suspects. I guess we'll take their word for it.

She said it was determined that Ramadan was ineligible to enter the country "based solely on his actions, which constituted providing material support to a terrorist organization." Hironimus said she could not reveal specifics about Ramadan's case due to confidentiality rules regarding visa applications.
The ...[ACLU] said the U.S. government notified Ramadan he was being excluded because he donated about $765 to French and Swiss organizations* that provide humanitarian aid to Palestinians. [* My note: And which would those be?]
The ACLU said the organizations are legitimate charities in France* [*My note: so what? He's not French and neither are we], but the Bush administration contends the groups gave funds to Hamas and has invoked a law allowing it to exclude individuals whom it believes have supported terrorism.
"This case is really about speech," said Jameel Jaffer, an ACLU lawyer. "The government is using the immigration laws as a means of silencing and stigmatizing a prominent critic."
Ramadan, a Swiss citizen and a visiting fellow at Oxford University in England, has said he opposes the U.S. invasion of Iraq and U.S policies in Israel and the Palestinian terrotories [sic], though he has no connections to terrorism, opposes Islamic extremism and promotes peaceful solutions.
On his Web site, Ramadan said in a statement Monday that he brought the donations to the State Department's attention and that the organizations "are not deemed suspect in Europe, where I live."

Ramadan likes to play the role of the victim and moderate but instead of talking moderation where it needs to be spoken - into the faces of the radicals in the Middle East- he spends all of his time trying to preaching to the western world.

If he was truly a moderate he wouldn't be trying to get into a position where he can lecture US college students. He would be trying to persuade muslim students not to blow themselves up.

Lots of prominent moderate Muslims are also accusing Ramadan of double talk and hijacking Islam for a dangerous project. Most of his detractors are coincidentally Muslim. AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Dutch city of Rotterdam and its university have fired Swiss Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan as an adviser to the city over his involvement with groups that detractors say hurt his role as an expert on integration issues.

Ramadan is a visiting professor of theology at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands’ second-largest city.

Rotterdam’s mayor is Ahmed Aboutaleb, a Muslim who was formerly junior minister for social affairs and who has vowed to ease tensions between the city’s native Dutch and a growing immigrant population.

Ramadan was criticized after media reported last week he was hosting a weekly television show on broadcaster Press TV, which Rotterdam says is financed by the Iran government.
