South Korean government workers are being given an unusual instruction - go home and multiply.

At 1900 on Wednesday, officials at the Ministry of Health will turn off all the lights in the building.

They want to encourage staff to go home to their families and, well, make bigger ones. They plan to repeat the experiment every month.

The country has one of the world's lowest birth rates, lower even than neighbouring Japan.

We have come a long way from God telling us to "go forth and multiply", now we have to wait for some government bureaucrat to tell us to do so?!

Why don’t they just open their doors to the world’s immigrants. Lord knows there are many out there looking for a better life, e.g. Haitians.

Gee, I wished I worked in Korea. Why don’t they institute the nooner lunch policy with a tax credit for every delivery?

Indeed. I can support this type of stimulus program.

It's called "working from home".

The fertility rate in Korea is 1.21 children born/woman (2009 est.) which is 218th in the world. The replacement rate is 2.1.

The Korean and Japanese families I know here in California often have 3 kids. I think maybe we are attracting the optimists, who want to live a little larger than they could at home.

1900??!!

1900 = 7 P.M. for you non-military types.

The answer seems rather simple:
Leave work before 7pm EVERY night.

Then perhaps y'all will have enough ENERGY to - well, you know...

They want Korean babies, or at least Asian babies (they import a lot of women from SE Asia as mail order brides for Korean farmers).

The reason the fertility rate is so low is that education (even k-12) is very expensive in Korea. Most middle class families can afford to have only one child.

Well, in this case, they aren't infringing on citizens prviate time. They're giving them free time to GO HOME!

Well the cost of education and the pressures of education are a lot less here than in Korea. And with their US passports, they don't automatically get drafted into the ROK army when they're 20 years old.
