Strong Aftershock Hits Haiti
Wall Street Journal ^ | AP

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti—A powerful aftershock struck Haiti on Wednesday, shaking buildings and sending screaming people running into the streets only eight days after the country's capital was devastated by a major earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.1 tremblor hit at 6:03 a.m. (11:03 a.m. GMT) about 35 miles northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince. It struck at a depth of 13.7 miles but was located too far inland to generate any tidal waves in the Caribbean.

Wails of terror rose Wednesday from frightened survivors of the apocalyptic quake that struck eight days ago as people as people poured out of unstable buildings.

It wasn't immediately possible to ascertain what additional damage the new quake may have caused.

Last week's magnitude-7 quake killed an estimated 200,000 people in Haiti, left 250,000 injured and made 1.5 million homeless. A massive international aid effort has been launched, but is struggling with overwhelming logistical problems.

I saw a panel on Fox News discussing the rebuilding a couple of days after the big one — they all agreed the rebuilt buildings don’t need to be constructed with earthquake-resistant codes because the country can’t afford it, and earthquakes are rare events.

Really.

Could well be. The magnitude is the real story. 6.1 is a substantial quake.

Exactly! When do the *after shocks* stop and *new* earthquakes begin?

It's not God. God is slow to anger, His mercy trumps His judgments. This is what life is like when you live in an imperfect world. This is what sin that came into the world brought. God didn't do it and I'm really tired of people blaming God. If you want to blame someone, blame satan. He's the one that's out to kill, steal and destroy. I can tell you for sure, God is grieving for the lost. He gave His Son for the lost.

I woke up about 6:00 this morning and I felt like I needed to pray for Haiti, so I did. Now I know why. I just got up about 15 minutes ago to see that Haiti had another quake. I know it was God who woke me to pray. Although I was praying for Haiti, my focus was on the Hotel where there are 19 American's still trapped. They don't know if they are dead or alive because no one has gone there to try and see. They say the reason is, they don't have the heavy equipment to move the cement. I find it remarkable that we would not go there first, at least try to see if they can do something.

PRAY FOR HAITI, PRAY FOR OUR FELLOW AMERICANS still trapped and help where you can.

Is this an aftershock or a new earthquake somehow triggered by Ted Kennedy rolling in his grave?

LOL, you read my mind. He WILL blame it on Scott Brown within the next day or two ... bet on it. Or he’ll say it’s God punishing Haiti for the evil deeds of the U.S. Bank on it!

Yeah, he could have been rolling in his grave, or it may have just been one of his giant hiccups - you know - the kind you get when you swallow too much bourbon and then too much sea water.

The news said epi was 45 miles north of PaP- believe this is different area than the last big one. But people have been fleeing north to get away from PaP. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

I don’t see how the people who say it is not God, are any different than the people who say it is God. How do you know? Did God tell you it wasn’t Him?

God may be slow to anger, but that slowness is not infinite. There is a long list of Scriptures where God is on record as using nature to punish nations.

I see your point that it is Satan who tempted man into sin and thus Satan is to blame for sin and the earth being cursed. But it is also God who judges man and nations, and who ultimately judges sin. It is God who placed the curse on the earth. And it is God who teaches us about spiritual illness and death through physical illness and death.

Even if this was not directly God, and just a natural occurrence due to the laws that God put in place, God still knew it was going to happen. Your own post acknowledges that when you say God woke you up before it happened to pray. God is not powerless. At the very least, God allowed this to happen.

Why? I don’t know. God is far wiser than me and I trust Him. He allowed Israel to be captured and thrown into captivity so that a remnant might be saved. Apparently even the remnant would have been lost spiritually, if God had done nothing.

God does indeed grieve for the lost souls. God also says He repays evil with evil and His spirit will not always strive with man. God will not tolerate evil forever. He prefers evil be destroyed through repentance, but He has other means.

I can’t say whether it was God or not. But I think the world should sit up and take notice. We are not guaranteed tomorrow, whether we are an archbishop or the poorest of the poor.
