Erich Segal, a Yale classics professor turned popular writer whose first novel, Love Story, became a staggering commercial success if not quite a critical one when it appeared in 1970, died on Sunday at his home in London. He was 72.
The cause was a heart attack.. Mr. Segal had been ill with Parkinsons disease for 25 years.
The novel spent more than a year on the New York Times hardcover best-seller list. It has sold tens of millions of copies and been translated into many languages.
Released to great fanfare on the books coattails, the movie, starring Ryan ONeal and Ali MacGraw, appeared at the end of 1970. In a 2000 article, Variety called it the first of the modern-day blockbusters, writing that it had grossed nearly $200 million and saved its studio, Paramount Pictures, which was facing imminent destruction.
Along with the music, several of Mr. Segals lines are etched in public memory. They include the novels opening What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who died? and, in particular, as the film put it, Love means never having to say youre sorry, an aphorism that inspired decades of permutations and parodies. In the novel, the line was Love means not ever having to say youre sorry.
Love Story was in the news again in the late 1990s, after Al Gore, then the vice president, was reported to have described himself as the inspiration for Oliver Barrett.
Mr. Segal set the record straight: Oliver, he said, was mainly a youthful incarnation of the actor Tommy Lee Jones. He did say that he had modeled Olivers freighted relationship with his father on the Gore family.

Written by a man who obviously hadn't a clue about what love means.
Prayers to his family. 72 is way too young to die.
Being a Democrat means never having to admit you were wrong - only that everyone else was.
When I was a teen in high school this was the big movie.
Even then I could see it was a piece of tripe with horrible acting, except for perhaps Ray Milland.

RIP.
Ali was hot !
Ali McGraw was pretty, but couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag. I saw Love Story when I was 18 yrs.old. It was unwatchable. I could not understand what the hype was all about. RIP to Erich Segal. Condolences to his family. My boss was friends with is mother.
Love Story was his worst book......The Class, The Doctors, Prizes, were his really good works. Don’t understand why Hollywood chose three of his most boring books to turn in to movies.
I’ve never seen this movie. Guess I’m going to have not find it this weekend and not watch it again.
Is that what Tipper looked like back when.
was a big F Word vehicle too....just intentional nasty stuff just to shock
Nah. Tipper was a big tall beautiful, size 16 corn-fed blonde. BTW, during the Clinton-Gore Era, press photographers were never, I SAY NEVVAH, allowed to photograph Al and Tipper, or Bill and Hillary from behind.
Together, the gluteally over-endowed Clintons and Gores (who loathed each other) could blot out the Sun enough to cause serious crop failure.
BTW, criticize the other three as much as you want, but say anything nasty about Tipper, and I'll be in MA a-lookin' for trouble! She'da met me first, she woulda never, I SAY NEVVAH, married that pompous idiot Al.
