Sen. Webb: No HCR Votes Until Brown Seated
talking points memo ^
Posted on 01/19/2010 7:10:50 PM PST by cdchik123
Less than 15 minutes after the race was called for Republican Scott Brown, the first of what could be many conservative Democrats asks for leadership to put the brakes on health care reform.
Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) congratulated Brown on his win and delivered a zinger:
"In many ways the campaign in Massachusetts became a referendum not only on health care reform but also on the openness and integrity of our government process. It is vital that we restore the respect of the American people in our system of government and in our leaders. To that end, I believe it would only be fair and prudent that we suspend further votes on health care legislation until Senator-elect Brown is seated."

He can try to make the switch, but I want the GOP to have no part of him come November
I think Webb is probably doing the CBA on a switch as we speak. If he does, he needs to do it NOW, that way he can alter his voting patterns to establish Conservative bona fides before he's up for reelection. If he waits too long (he may already have) he'll end up being another Arlen Specter.

He’s hoping this is stopped in its tracks, and then people will forget he votes for this.

There will be more. It’ll be a democratic gullywasher of RATS jumping that sinking ship.

Too little, too late. As one of your constituents, all I can say is, You blew it last year. Ruined my Christmas Eve, only because you didn't see tonight's tsunami in MA coming.
You're dead to me, Jim....

Webb has a sense of what sort of firestorm would result if they tried to slip Obamacare through before Brown is seated.

Does Webb have integrity or is he just being pragmatic? --
He's playing to the cameras. No way does he have the interests of the people in mind - completely self-serving comment, trying to gin up "brownie points."

Jim Webb knows how the winds are going in VA, and that 2006 and 2008 were flukes. Exactly ...
NOW, if other Dems in vulnerable states and districts can read the tea leaves too, maybe some semblance of sanity will come back to Capitol Hill ...

I wish people would quit using the term moderate democrat. Me too, I want to see every single one of them bite the dust. I do believe in a two party system - Conservative Republicans and even more Conservative Republicans.

Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC says Webb is speaking for about ten "moderate" Democrat senators on this.
Chris Matthews earlier raised the tactic that the Democrats could lose nine senators' votes and still pass a healthcare bill with Biden's tie-breaker vote.

The true Democreeps will gravitate to the center to survive. However the true believer “Progressives” (Obummer, Pelosi, Reid) will drive harder and further left regardless of what it means for themselves. They see this as their last great chance to “radically transform Amerika”. He’s committed and crazy enough to do it.
