Massachusetts Democrats put Kennedy seat at risk themselves (RATS tinkered with election law)

Mass Democrats put Kennedy seat at risk themselves

AP Political Writer / January 19, 2010

BOSTON - The special election that risked President Barack Obama's legislative agenda -- and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's dream of a health care overhaul -- would not have occurred if Kennedy and his fellow Democrats never tinkered with Massachusetts election law.

In 2004, when Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts was the Democratic presidential nominee, Kennedy and others moved to block then-Gov. Mitt Romney from appointing a fellow Republican to fill the vacancy that would have occurred if Kerry beat the GOP incumbent, President George W. Bush.

They persuaded legislative Democrats to revoke the governor's appointment power and replace it with a special election held within 145 and 160 days.

Everyone's argument? It was better to have the voters -- rather than a solitary figure -- fill such an important seat.

When Kennedy died last August of brain cancer, state officials called for a special election to be held Tuesday.

**SNIP**

Had Massachusetts Democrats not changed the law five years ago, the Kennedy vacancy would have been filled by the state's current governor-- Deval Patrick, a Chicagoan, fellow Harvard Law graduate and close friend of Obama's.

Imagine the irony - Kennedy is probably “down there” watching as the person who gets “his seat” may end up being the one to stop the Health Care Bill he tried so hard to shove down the nation’s throat.

Hoist on their own petard. The perfect example of the old chinese adage, “be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.” Effing idiots.

Didn’t they change the law back, or I guess, partially or something like that?

Kennedy certainly isn't 'looking down from above' as events unfold this evening in the Bay State. He could never have for seen this turn of events ... not in his worst nightmare.

Yeah ... they took the power of appointment away from Romney and put it in the hands of the voters, with a special election - BUT made NO PROVISION for an interim Senator during the period between the date of vacancy and the date of election.

Because of Obamacare, the MA legislature changed the law so that the Governor (now a Democrat) could appoint an interim Senator ...

This Senator (a DEM) would have seen that Obamacare became law (had it not stalled in Congress), then bow out to the winner of the special election ...

Actually, all of this lies at the feet of the Lyin’ Liberal, Ted K.

He could have stepped down to the cheers of teary-eyed moonbats, and then endorsed one of the candidates to great publicity. That candidate would probably have coasted to a win.

Instead, he wanted to see our healthcare system destroyed before he died...a death put at bay by that healthcare system (the best in the world).

So he held on...figuring those saps in Mass. would never elect anything but a democrat. He made Scott Brown’s win possible, and the defeat of his healthcare dream (our nightmare) probable.

You all know, of course, that before Kennedy began his dirt nap, that he urged the MA legislature to change the law?
