Butter should be banned to protect the nation's health, according to a leading heart surgeon. Shyam Kolvekar says only radical action can save growing numbers of young adults from heart attacks and clogged arteries.

Warning of the dangers of other foods high in saturated fat, he advises people to eat less red meat, take low-fat milk and switch to olive and sunflower oil. Saturated fat is blamed for a third of the 200,000 premature deaths from heart disease a year.

Adults are eating an average of 800 grams of it a month - 20 per cent more than the recommended limit. Hitting the recommended level could save 3,500 lives a year. Mr Kolvekar, a consultant at University College London Hospitals, said: 'By banning butter and replacing it with a healthy spread the average daily sat-fat intake would be reduced by eight grams.

Butter is superior to margarine, they ought to ban that garbage and leave the butter alone.

But taking away a product that people universally love? Wars have begun that way.

Would anyone like to explain exactly what this sentence means:
“Saturated fat is blamed for a third of the 200,000 premature deaths from heart disease a year.”

I understand how one can say “Knives are blamed for X% of homocides each year.” Or “Y% of drivers killed in car accidents have alcohol levels above legal limit.” I doubt the same tight coupling between cause and effect exists in the case of saturated fat. This type of reporting is not useful.

The good doctor needs to understand that the consumption of butter is a risk vs. reward decision that he doesn’t have the authority to make.

And those of us fortunate enough to have low cholesterol but ARE allergic to hydrogenated vegetable oils? (read the labels on margarine folks)

Will we then be 'permitted' to purchase the by then $12 a pound butter with a doctor's prescription?

Is Tofu really the only food left to mankind to eat......?

That will be bad news for me. I will never again be able to convince my wife it was the dog. Tofu makes me windier than a Kentucky thoroughbred..

I pop corn in olive oil and then finish off with melted butter.

Very yummy.

Reminds me I am out of Orville’s popcorn. (It is the best) Must remember to stop off and get some.

Need it for tomorrow’s election.

Always pop my corn in olive oil and then you might want to try some pesto seasoning and a little salt. Wonderful.

Eat well, exercise, die anyway...

Do you want to arrive at the Pearly Gates is a perfectly preserved body? Or do you want to show up in a worn out wreck of a corpse saying, "Woo! What a ride!!!"

Butter is the only ‘healthy’ spread out there.

Butter is natural, and provides numerous necessary nutrients, while all the substitutes are toxic and hazardous.

Politically correct ‘science’ isn’t science at all.

absolutely, it's all about dosage. Don't get me wrong I like to drink (alot) and can eat enough steak at one sitting to kill a man but you have to have balance.
