In such a close race, anything could tip the balance, and Massachusetts is devoted to its baseball team.
Martha Coakley, the Democratic candidate in Tuesday's special election for Massachusetts senator, didn't do her campaign any favors Friday by dismissing Boston Red Sox hero Curt Schilling as a "Yankees fan."
In such a close race, anything could tip the balance, and Massachusetts is devoted to its baseball team, especially after it reversed years of bad fortune in 2004 by defeating the Yankees in the playoffs and going on to win the World Series with Schilling's help.
The gaffe came in a talk radio interview Friday night. Coakley, who is vying to fill the late Ted Kennedy's Senate seat, took a swipe at former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani for dropping in Massachusetts to campaign for the Republican candidate, Scott Brown. Giuliani is well known as a Yankees fan.
But Coakley hit a foul ball when the show's host, Dan Rea, noted that Schilling is supporting Brown.
"And another Yankee fan," she said, apparently stunning Rea.
"Curt Schilling, a Yankee fan?" Rea asked, prompting Coakley to quickly backtrack.
"Ok, I'm wrong," she said.
"The Red Sox great pitcher of the bloody sock?" Rea asked, referring to the World Series game that Schilling pitched with an ankle injury that caused blood to stain his sock.
Schilling...
"I've been called a lot of things ... but never, I mean never, could anyone make the mistake of calling me a Yankee fan," he said on his blog. "Well, check that. If you didn't know what the hell is going on in your own state, maybe you could

Thank God she is such an incompetent boob ;-)
He links to a Michelle Malkin piece about Coakley's gaffe.
Coakley bristles at the suggestion that, with so little time left, in an election with such high stakes, she is being too passive. "As opposed to standing outside Fenway Park? In the cold? Shaking hands?" she fires back, in an apparent reference to a Brown online video of him doing just that.
Everytime she opens her mouth; she inserts her foot.
That’s probably the most insulting name you can call someone.
Red Sox...Patriots...doesn’t matter....they’re all playing golf now...
I wonder if Biden’s coaching her. He’s another gaffe-a-minute dem.
Had I been interviewing her I would have said “And, we all know Larry Bird is a huge Lakers fan, right?” You JUST KNOW she would have taken the bait hook, line and sinker.
Curt Shchilling a Yankee fan? Isn’t there a minimum level of intelligence for politicians in Massachusetts?
We aren’t demanding Founding Father stature for our candidates but they should rise above Village Idiot status (my apologies to the Village Idiots for the unseemly comparison). Martha suffers from incurable foot in mouth disease and will be an embarrassment to all citizens of the Commonwealth if elected.
Combine this with the remark that Catholics shouldn’t be allowed to work in hospital emergency rooms (how will the ‘Southies” Irish from S. Boston react to that reminder of the days when Mass. brahmins put out signs ‘no Irish need apply’) and she is perhaps the worst Dem gaffe-maker since Joe Biden.
Martha Coakley is a moron - she’s another example of how deeply moronic all liberals are.
is she sabotaging her campaign on purpose? she cant possibly be this stupid making a mistake after another, if the Democrats really wanted this seat they would shut her up and connect her with a good campaign staff. But something is not right, look at Creigh deeds he was a moron but he ran a decent camping compared to this one.I cant imagine the Democrats just handing this important seat to the republican this easy. Something is up their sleeve.
I just got up to Martha Coakley's campaign HQ to help her win Tuesday's crucial special election. I have to tell you -- this isn't like anything Massachusetts has ever seen.
It's happening right after the holidays, so a lot of people haven't even heard about it. Meanwhile, the same guys behind the Swift Boat ads are taking over the airwaves to distort Martha's record, and the same far-right tea-party crowd that's attacking President Obama is funding her opponent.
The stakes in this race are incredibly high. If we don't hold this seat, a right-wing Republican will hold Sen. Ted Kennedy's old seat until at least 2012 -- and we'll lose a crucial vote in the Senate for health reform and the agenda we fought so hard for last year.
That's why we're going all out in Massachusetts with a massive effort to lock up a Democratic victory. But we can only afford to keep this battle up against the far right through Election Day if folks like you chip in.
Please donate $5 or more to help us make Martha Coakley the next senator from Massachusetts.
Democratic ads are highlighting the key differences between Martha, a long-time public servant and one of the nation's best attorneys general, and her extreme Republican opponent who would walk in lockstep with Mitch McConnell and national GOP power brokers.
And our organizers are engaging volunteers by the thousands to make sure Obama voters make it back to the polls.
But we need your help to keep it going. Please donate $5 or more to the Democratic Party to support our work, including our efforts to elect Martha Coakley:
Let's win this,

I’m surprised this woman got this far in politics with that dimwit brain.
Well it is certainly the most insulting name you could call a Red Sox fan. And to call Curt Schilling that... well it's just beyond all understanding.
As a New York state resident, of course, I don't mind being called a Yankee fan at all. I am one. But I would not insult Curt Schilling by claiming he had lost allegiance to his team. I would not discredit his amazing accomplishments. In my opinion he is probably worthy of Cooperstown. You might even say that he-of-the-bloody-sock helped lift the curse of the bambino. Good for him.
Well, she is running for the Sammy Sooser-Mike McGwire seat, isn’t she?
