Haiti's Earthquake: Are the Death Estimates Accurate?
Time ^

Posted on 01/16/2010 11:31:25 AM PST by Chet 99

Days removed from the deadly earthquake near Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, estimates of the number killed are still wide-ranging - figures ranged as high as a half-million in the immediate aftermath of the temblor but floated downward in recent days, with the latest estimate from the Haitian government at 140,000. Experts caution that any figure should be taken with a grain of salt, as rescue workers are only now getting on the ground and recovery efforts continue across the city. But the fluctuating figures - and the inexact casualty totals from disasters past - raise the question: how will we ever know just how many people died in the Haitian quake?

. . .

The hope, of course, is that the tally won't be as bad as feared. Penna points to recent earthquakes in Kashmir in 2005 and China in 2009, both of which, while horrific, ultimately killed fewer people than initially thought. Why the overestimation? Penna says there's a tendency toward sensationalism in the aftermath of a disaster, in part because of incomplete information and in part to spur donations.

There were roughly 225,000 structures in Port-au-Prince. 90% were flattened.

My ugly guess is 250,000+ dead!

Whatever the count is today, it will rise quickly tomorrow.

First 72 hours are critical. After that dead bodies begin gassing, the wounds seep and others get real sick.

Cholera, Dissentary, bug bites from critters feeding on dead bodies, stray animals, etc.

Nasty stuff.

All the focus and reporting has been on Port au Prince. If Port au Prince is in chaos, imagine the state of the remainder the country. Life has probably already turned stone-age there.

Cholera from contaminated sources is the biggest worry
and we have yet to see the first case but they will
be showing up in a week or so. People who survived the
quake will not be alive in just a few weeks.

Sad. Nothing like feeling your insides coming back up your throat and feeling them come out the other side.

Horrible.

I have been warning FR’ers that Obama and the liberal newsmedia is going to use Haiti against America. Open borders, endless aid, evil. military not showing up fast enough, overdramatization of the damage and death tool.

how will we ever know just how many people died in the Haitian quake?

There's a saying about Africa, about how you can tell if a country is still psychologically a white empire country or has reverted to an African country. In the white countries they count the bodies. In the African countries they don't.

Haiti is an African country in the Caribbean. They don't really do a census or count bodies. I doubt counts were taken for many of the bodies that have already been dumped in mass graves.

True story: We were driving on one of the mountain roads and the guy driving told us about a bus that went off the cliff at a curve. The drop was around a hundred feet. A forty passenger bus was probably carrying well over 100 people. The authorities, such as they were, never even visited the site. Some people went down and stripped valuables from the bodies, while some others went down to look for relatives, but bus and the majority of the bodies stayed at the bottom of the cliff.

Very hard to maintain sanitation under these conditions,
I have no doubt we will see LARGE numbers of people
sicken and die from it.

The world press is not prepared for this type of epidemic
which hasn’t happened on this scale for a hundred or
more years. They will be shocked.
As usual the US will do it’s utmost to control the situation
and save lives but we will still hear the left’s yapping
dogs barking about how we “Could have done more!”.

I haven't watched ABC in decades but last night was channel surfing before I turned out the light. 20/20 was on and Chris (Cumo?) was complaining about unfair it was that rescuers from the U.S. were digging through the rubble of some very nice hotel (sorry I forget the name) that rich foreigners stay at in Port au Prince but poor Haitians were being left to struggle on their own.

Hello Chris! Aren't you one of the liberal elitists?

I wanted to take that mic he was using, shove it down his throat and use the cord to strangle him!

Yup. I cancels TV because they are all liars. Fox is better but they are 20% owned by the Saudis. I have warned people this coverage will all be orchestrated by Obama’s goons for some political aim. The Haitian “govt” whatever that is will lie about damage and death tolls.

The liberal newsmedia will lie. It is all about get U.S. taxpayer money and more Haitians into FL and the USA. I have been attacked for pointing this out by some FR’ers and one actually called me an AH in the forum using the actual word. We are being played folks.

The liberal media hates us and they are also going to try anything and everything to make sure Scott Brown loses. They have attacked Sarah Palin mercilessly - why? Because she is a lot like many of the people who post here - avg American.

True and this could happen anywhere. I am right on the San Andreas fault and we are waiting for the next one, with a sense it will be worse than 1989.

That’s why I carry Katydin tablets and filter, Lifesaver Bottle and a 5 gallon collapsible container for water and cleaning.

That should be enough to keep me until I get home or to my sencondary, third or fourth location and if need be my Get out of Dodge location.

Most people are going to go the mountains on the west as the redwoods provide shelter, firewood and a sense of safety. It also more familiar to people.

Me I am going east to other areas not frequented where there will be less people to contend with except people like me and we could probably band together, as we are of like minds and backgrounds.

From there, depending on the season, I can decide if I am hoofing it North or South.

The Rise and Fall of the "Bus Plunge" Story

I think probably any poor country with mountain roads has bus plunges, whether it is in Africa or not. No doubt many of these incidents are never visited by authorities.

You’ll get no criticism from me. Situations such as this always brings out the bleeding hearts that reside here. Well, they should be the ones opening their wallets and house up for those in need.

Obama’s gang are seriously looking for a way to get their hands on $8 to 12 trillion in retirement, IRA, 401-K and other assets. Argentina’s Peronist thugs did that last year where they took all the private pension assets. They did the same thing about a decade ago by defaulting on Argentina’s debt held by lots of retirees in Europe.

Obama’s goons are thinking of a retirement annuity run by t he US Govt that will be very safe without stock market volatility (that their hedge fund pals like Soros made tens of billions cooking up - they stole people retirement money through manipulation).

Peggy Joseph said in 2008 in west Lauderdale at an Obama rally: “Obama is gonna pay my mortgage and put gas in my car.” She is Haitian-American.

We need to help, send aid, etc etc. It is happening but Haiti is not a state in the USA like Colorado, Vermont, etc. They need to get their act together and have not for 200+ years.

All these bleeding hearts sucking up the liberal newsmedia’s misery TV coverage can remember this post when Obama takes their retirement money to help the poor Haitians or poor whomever who will vote for the Dem thugs.

The evil these people will do knows no bounds. Obama is doing EXACTLY what the left/islamists did to destroy the UK. Haitians and more open borders are part of that plan.

The bleeding hearts have no clue that the USA is broke aka bankrupt. Their savings will bailout Obama.
