I wonder how many will be taken in by say China, or Canada or Italy or any other nation that is sending help of any kind? I bet not one will take those folks who will be on food stamps and health care care of out dimes..wait and see.

There are some interesting Scripture studies of the doctrine of arrogance which describes observations of Haitians today.
Arrogance begins with the individual, but groupings of people can also manifest arrogant behavior and thinking of those groups.
In some later stages of arrogance at the national level, the arrogant may begin to interpret external friendly acts of grace as adversarial attacks from within.
When preparing for external threats, they might confuse even their closest allies and countrymen as threats, consuming themselves in a psychopathic frenzy.
IMHO, the best solution is to first abide in Christ through faith in Him, and act with love towards our fellow man as ourselves.
We are waiting out a cash flow crunch at the moment. It was a good time to triage the food stores. I discovered a package of canned tomato paste that was 14 months beyond the expiration date. I opened it with trepidation, but it was just fine, no oxidation of the can, no *off* flavor or smell or appearance.
A small can of Nestle Table Cream was just at the expiration and I was prepared to have to throw it out. It was just fine, as well and lasted 3 days in the fridge after being opened. We have forgotten venison in the freezer at times for over a year. As long as it was well wrapped, usually in a locker package, it was also just fine. If it got freezer burn for some reason, I cook it up for the dog. He is a picky eater and has never turned down slightly freezer burned meat.
I am also old enough to remember no expiration dates and that was a time when cans were not plastic lined and were just tinned steel. Even newly purchased canned vegetables could sometimes taste metallic and mushy canned veggies was the norm. Day old store-bought bread? That stuff is so full of preservatives, it takes months for anything to grow on it. Toast it or sprinkle on some water, tent it in foil and after 10 minutes in the oven, it tastes fresh.
The younger generations may need to go through hard times before they have enough experience to rely on their own senses. IMO, anyone complaining about a date when they are starving just isn’t hungry enough.
I don’t know how anyone could interpret an external act of charity as an attack from within. However, your comment could be interpreted that way.
Gotta wonder how much good food is wasted annually by people afraid of the freshness date.
That said, gotta admit 14 months is dicey; you are brave. ;)
Babies and young children (especially the orphans) will not be able to do anything.
If they were raised and educated here, they could do a lot more.
I’m not advocating that our government do anything. I’m just wondering if there are people that could adopt these children. Makes me even think about my own situation and how I could help. Now is not the time for us. I have to have surgery for a hip injury.
That’s funny about the expiration date. My kids freak out also if it’s past the expiration date.

Seriously, if a product expires on 1/15, at 6:45 breakfast on 1/16, the product is radioactive/toxic/unfit for human consumption?

This Haiti tragedy has really stirred a mix of philosophy and emotions. My response today is to help the sick,hungry, and greiving. No doubt in a month or two the American people should have the arguments of Haitian civil structure and the best way forward.
It blows me away that Haiti has several hundred thousand orphans and it takes two years to adopt a child and get them out of the country. Our State Department had better use a darned heavy hand to rectify these many needless situations of suffering of the most innocent among us.
A few nights ago, after the sun set in Port AuPrince, the electric power was down, and it was very dark in the city. A truck approached some of the people who were living outside, for fear of another quake would destroy any structure they might indwell. The truck had a pallet of bottled water, which was being distributed freely to those without much. As the truck approached, some on it shouted out they had water. Those who heard this in the dark misinterpretted their meaning, and confused the situation with a warning of flooding, as days earlier there also had been tsunami warnings, which had since been relaxed and cleared.
Within minutes a crowd raised from 10 to 20 to 50 to 100 to about 1000 running upp street, climbing over each other in fear of an approaching tsunami, yelling Water! Water!
Whereas the actual gesture was one of charity from an external source, the thinking of the people interpretted its delivery as another life threatening event.
Those with simple patience and perseverence in faith through Christ, saw the charity for what it was, while those who always believed they could control things and their fate by their own action, tended to place caution ahead of patience, resulting in mob psychology and the impoverished losing even more than they had lost already.
The incident was partially covered live on CNN with John Anderson a few nights ago.
I wonder about the expiratrion dates as well. For me the dairy category is strictly abided. I have heard though that milk can last much longer as long as it is kept good and cold. My guess is that lawyers have more to do with expiration dates than even the producers providing the food to the marketplace.
Except for some products,...like skim and whole milk. It can be very dangerous to lift the lid and take a sniff.
I agree. It appears the bleeding hearts are out in full force.
When I was a kid, once a year my parents would send me down to the basement and sort through every can. I checked the tops to see if the tin “clicked” when you pushed on it, or if it was bulged. Some of it was several years old. Every year there was at least one can that went bad. Sometimes there were a dozen. The really bad ones I would throw down really hard to the bottom of a garbage can to see if I could make it explode.
I think there are still a few brands out there with unlined cans. Seems like it wasn’t all that long ago I had some fruit medley in a galvanized can. Don’t drink the juice out of the can. It’s like chewing on tin foil when the foil hits a filling...or tastes like a charged 9 volt battery to the tongue.
Milk and other products will stay edible for several more days.
I believe the time after the date varies with the product.
I know more than one person that thinks mild goes bad at the exact date stamped on the package!
