Big-name Kennedy endorsements for Martha Coakley appear to have been little help to the Democrat in the U.S. Senate race - and may have even hurt her with some voters, a new Suffolk University/7News poll shows.
The late Sen. Edward M. Kennedys widow, Vicki, and nephew Joseph Kennedy II gave the attorney general their official blessing last week.
But of the 500 voters surveyed, only 20 percent said the Kennedy family nod made them more likely to vote for Coakley, and 27 percent said the endorsement made them less likely to support her.
More than half of voters - 52 percent - said the endorsements had no effect, and 2 percent were undecided or refused to answer.
For independents, it doesnt appear to have a positive effect. In fact, it may have had a negative effect, said David Paleologis, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center.
The Jan. 7 endorsement featured Kennedys widow as well as former U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy II at a widely-covered news conference.
It might have convinced some undecided Dems to come home, but the bigger picture block of voters is the independents, said the Suffolk pollster.
Democrats were clamoring during the primary for the Kennedy endorsements. But waiting until less than two weeks before voters go to the polls - and with their only other option a Republican - the nod rang hollow with voters, Paleologos said.
Today, former President Bill Clinton hits the trail for Coakley. He is viewed favorably by 59 percent of voters, according to the poll, compared to 34 percent who view him unfavorably and 8 percent who remain undecided.

Maybe people are ready to end the Kennedy crime spree.?.
Brown’s line about it NOT Being Kennedy’s Senate SEAT was genius!
That would be a nice side effect of winning. The Kennedy crime brand would be finished.
Nice to think so, but I’m not sure I believe this. I think Martha Coakley has done this to herself. She is about as bad a candidate as they could have found. Apparently she’s incapable of getting up and talking to a crowd even with a teleprompter. And she sure isn’t very good with reporters, either.
Perhaps it started when the Kennedys trotted the wee bairn up on the altar to plead for grandpa’s health care during his funeral. Or maybe it started when one of the Kennedy lasses flipped the bird to people along the roadside waving to them. Who knows?
Group endorsements, like prolife, NRA, pro business groups and of course, the liberal interest groups, all matter.
However, most of us expect the Party to stay together, at General election time, and we ignore individual endorsements.
Billybobs trying to sabotage her because 0 goes where she goes.
Where? Isn't he supposed to be headed to Haiti?
Keep an eye on Coakley the next few days to see if she wears a blue dress.
Bubba will be in Worcester and Boston today (Friday).
Bubba is telling all of us to send money to “his fund” for Haiti. Give me a break. Why doesn’t he donate from his treasure chest and go there! He is the “envoy” afterall.
I actually know people who know missionaries down there. Her perspective is that we cannot paint a broad brush of the people down there. There are good people down there, and they are now trapped. If I give any money, it will go to the organization where my friend is connected. I know it will do some good there.
Heck, I view Rodeo Clowns favorably. But I don't take advice from them...
He was president for eight years, and still, 8% of those polled are “undecided” about him.
