Cloned passports and U.S. visas are being sold for between 7 and 10 thousand dollars in the Bolivian cities of Santa Cruz and Cochabamba. Some deals also include counterfeit departure stamps from the U.S. The Bolivian Consul in Miami, Milton Paniagua, revealed that some 140 Bolivians with this type of phony documentation have been detected and detained since the month of November.

Eight of the ten deadliest cities of the world are in Latin America
A Mexican organization called the “Consejo [Council] Ciudadano para la Seguridad Publica y la Justicia Penal” has ranked the ten most violent cities of the world. For the second consecutive year, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, heads the list with 2,658 homicides, a rate of 191 per 100,000 residents. Following Ciudad Juarez is San Pedro Sula, Honduras, with a rate of 119 per 100,000; then San Salvador, El Salvador, at a 95 rate; Caracas, Venezuela, at 94; Cali, Colombia, at 73; New Orleans, LA, and Tegucigalpa, Honduras, tie at 69; Medellin, Colombia, at 62. Cape Town, South Africa closes the top ten at 60.

Colombian army personnel seized 399 kilos (877.8 lbs.) of cocaine in the countryside near Mutata, in the northwest corner of the country, (near Panama.) The drug, worth some 10 million dollars in the black market, “was ready to be sent abroad.” No arrests were made.

El Salvador pushing for U.S. immigration reform
El Salvador’s Vice-Minister for Salvadorans Abroad visited Los Angeles this weekend to let the Central American community know about the migratory reform that the region’s governments are preparing. On Saturday, Vice-Minister Juan Jose Garcia said, via telephone, that he had met with the “Service Union and with the American Federation,” composed of state employees. He added that they are two of the most important labor unions in the United States who are working on the issue of integral migratory reform. Garcia stated, “For the first time, labor unions with a very large amount of resources and social mobilization are decidedly supporting the issue.” Furthermore, he gave information regarding the document produced by the governments of El Salvador, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. The official emphasized the regional character of the proposal, and that “never before had the region come to an accord about such an important strategic issue” as migratory reform. Likewise, he had a work meeting planned for Saturday with the Guatemalan Chancellor, Haroldo Rodas. A meeting with Salvadoran community leaders in Los Angeles is also foreseen. He added that they are open to suggestions from the community.

Hunger strike aims to halt deportations from the U.S.
Three Guatemalans from Huehuetenango reached the twelfth day of a hunger strike to demand that the U.S. Government halt round-ups and deportations of undocumented persons. The protest is being carried out in Homestead, 45 minutes from Miami, Florida.
Augusto Francisco, Sebastian Sebastian and Simon Mateo, who come from Santa Eulalia and Barillas, Huehuetenango, started a hunger strike on January 1st, along with Jenny Aguilar, Honduran, the Puerto Rican Wilfredo Mendoza, and the American Jonathan Fried, executive director of the pro-immigrant organization We Count, who called for this activity.
The purpose of the measure is to demand Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, to stop the round-ups and the deportations against the undocumented.
In a tent house, in the atrium of a Catholic Church of that locality, the six demonstrators placed air mattresses, chairs and other furnishings to ease discomforts while they await a response from Napolitano. Sebastian, who dedicates himself to the arts, in Miami, said via phone, “I hope the deportations stop; the disintegration of families cannot go on. Above all, God, we strive for something to take place in favor of the migrants. My heart breaks to see so many abandoned children when they capture the parents.” He asserted that he will go on a fast until attaining the stoppage of the persecution of undocumented ones.
Fried, grandchild of Jewish migrants, expressed his disillusionment about the actions of U.S. officials. He stated, “We are going to continue here until the situation of the undocumented improves, and the migratory reform is approved.”

Another noted Mexican criminal arrested
Teodoro Garcia, “El Teo”, one of the most wanted Mexican drug traffickers and extortionists, was arrested today (Tues.) in La Paz, Baja California Sur. Garcia had links with the Sinaloa Cartel as well as with “La Familia Michoacána.” He is said to be responsible for the death of at least 300 persons, including by chemical disintegration. [This news item was reported in every Mexican newspaper seen today, as well as some from Central America.]

Florida Immigrants Fast for Families

During this “immigration week of action”—while labor, faith and immigrant rights activists hold vigils, rallies, and press events across the country—one small group in Homestead, Florida is raising the stakes. Today marks the 13th day of a fast by six courageous activists, who are risking their lives to raise awareness about the hardship for communities and families when the government removes productive and peaceful loved ones from their midst.
After eating their last meal on December 31, 2009, Francisco Agustin, Jenny Aguilar, Jonathon Fried, Wilfredo Mendoza and Sebastian Caña committed to consume only liquids until the Obama Administration responds to their request to suspend deportations of undocumented immigrants with U.S. family members. As part of their demands, Fast for Our Families is asking DHS Secretary Napolitano to meet directly with fasters so that she can hear first-hand the cost of further delay on an overhaul of our broken immigration system.
Current detentions and deportations, the group says, are not only devastating for immigrant communities but are also wasting limited resources when the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) needs to focus on serious criminals and U.S. security risks. The tremendous resources wasted on deporting hard-working immigrants is out of line with U.S. values and makes little strategic sense as the Obama administration simultaneously commits to passing comprehensive reform this year.
So far, the call from Homestead, has gained national attention and inspired solidarity fasts across the country from activists who are frustrated that comprehensive immigration reform has not yet moved in Washington. These heart-felt actions in communities across the country mark a trend of field escalations that will continue until lawmakers make serious on their promise to overhaul a broken immigration system that has festered for far too long.
From the more than 1,000 mile march of DREAM students from Miami to Washington to a massive march planned to boycott Arizona Sheriff Arpaio, immigrant rights groups are finding new, creative ways to put a face on today’s broken immigration system. Simply put—they will not back down until Congress and the Obama administration passes a smart, comprehensive overhaul that truly protects immigrant families, strengthens the U.S. economy, and gets undocumented immigrants into the system. And until Congress acts, they’ll continue pressuring the Obama Administration to do everything they can to protect the human rights of immigrant families.

U.S. Border Patrol Agents come to the aide of two unaccompanied children
NOGALES, Ariz. - U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Nogales station rescued two unaccompanied children yesterday who were seen being pushed through the International Boundary fence into an inhospitable area.
An agent who responded to the scene was unable to locate any adults in the area related to the children. The agent took the children to the Nogales station for their safety as the area that they were in was unsafe for children.
At the station, agents learned that the children were five and two years old but were not related to each other.
Agents were unable to obtain further information including the children’s citizenship and contacted Child Protective Services.[snip]

Border Patrol in Texas Responds to Burglary Call, Arrests Member of Mexican Mafia

Del Rio, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Carrizo Springs Station arrested a Mexican Mafia member Thursday morning.
Agents patrolling near Asherton, Texas received a report of a burglary in progress. When agents arrived at the scene they saw a subject fleeing from a residence. Agents gave chase and took the individual into custody and recovered two rifles and a shotgun in the area.
The subject, a 24-year-old United States Citizen, admitted to being an active member of the Mexican Mafia criminal organization. Record checks indicated that he is wanted burglary of habitation and various probation violations

Tijuana reels amid a surge of violence
It’s been a bloody new year so far in this violence-racked city, leaving authorities stunned and apparently speechless. Three teenagers in school uniforms were mowed down by automatic-weapons fire Wednesday. Another youth was shot multiple times last week as he sat in his car outside his parents’ upscale home.
Four people were decapitated, at least 10 people were killed in drive-by attacks, and five people were kidnapped, including two security guards and a prominent businessman.
Just a few months ago, Tijuana was hailed by some as a success story in Mexico’s war on drug cartels. Top officials from the U.S. and Mexico, including President Felipe Calderon, praised the city’s efforts as a model for the rest of the country.

NEW ORLEANS — As the floodwaters of Hurricane Katrina receded in September, roads filled with residents leaving the city, their cars, SUVs and moving vans jammed with what they had salvaged of their lives.
But another mass movement was taking place on the other sides of the highways.
Thousands of men from Mexico and Central America were driving into the city. Word had spread throughout the Latino immigrant diaspora in America that the city had plenty of work, construction wages had doubled to $16 an hour and no one was asking for papers.
“It was like a Gold Rush,” said Oscar Calanche, a Guatemalan immigrant who lived in New Orleans before the storm and returned as soon as the waters receded. “In one car there’d be three up front and three or four in the back, with suitcases and tools on top. It looked like a river of people from our countries.”
