The scene of a mass murder yesterday afternoon is inside a "school safety zone."
Few details are known about why an ex-employee of a Penske Truck Rental facility in Kennesaw entered his former place of business and shot five people, killing three. No motive is yet being discussed.
Another thing that is not being discussed is the location of the murders. The Penske Truck Rental facility is located in one of Georgia's "school safety zones," an area extending 1,000 feet from any school, including adult colleges and technical schools. In this case the shooting occurred in the school safety zone surrounding Kennesaw State University, according to an alert sent by the school yesterday afternoon.
Georgia's school safety zone law makes it a felony punishable by ten years in prison and a $15,000 fine to carry a weapon, even a two inch blade on a keychain pocketknife, within 1,000 feet of the campus of any school.

agreed. If punkaticians want to make the schools safe, then train teachers and staff - and students from college level up - to use handguns, give them concealed weapons permits, and encourage them to carry.
Sadly, it is only a matter of time before another really bad incident occurs.
I guess I should be locked up and the key thrown away as I carry everywhere. Bought the wife to the hospital for some test the other day and there is a school right across the street from the hospital.
I drive through three on my way to work and then home again every day. Too bad.
Haven’t heard about this. So, those who haven’t done what they have been asked to do are now killing those who direct them? Saw this coming a long time ago. Unfortunately, we’re going to see a lot more of this because of the attitude problems of many in the U.S.
Also reminds one of the cartoon where deer are traveling down the side of a road looking for the crossing sign. It's equally credible to believe that a mass-murderer will check his GPS to ensure that he is outside any school safety zone. He certainly wouldn't want to run afoul of the law.
Isn’t Kennesaw the city where every household is required, by law, to own a gun?
Yes.
“If 1000 feet doesn’t work, let’s make it 2000 feet. Yeah, that’s the ticket.” /libtard speak
“Safety zone” for who, the criminals?

Brilliant thinking! Under this law I and all my schoolmates would have been locked up and fined before seventh grade. The teacher used to borrow a pocketknife from one of us when I was in fourth grade. The idiots have captured the asylum.

Holy halitosis batman! He broke the law taking a Gun inside a ‘Gun-free’ zone who would have thought THAT would happen!!!!!

AKA "target-rich environment."
No different from so-called sex-offender-free zones: "Here is a nice safe place where you can relax completely because you are totally safe here." Idiots.
America -- a great idea, didn't last.
The whole idea of a "gun free zone" near schools is repugnant to the Constitution.
Indeed. Infringing on the rights of law abiding citizens do not make students in these gun free zones safer.

Not entirely accurate:
Georgia Carry - Frequently Asked Questions
"Q: May I carry at school?
A: No! Georgia law provides that possessing a weapon within 1,000 feet of a school is a felony, punishable by up to ten years in prison.
There are numerous exceptions, however, and the most relevant are: A person with a firearms license may carry a firearm while dropping off or picking up a student. Off of the actual school property, a non-student may possess a firearm while in a vehicle in transit through the school zone, and any person residing in a school zone or conducting lawful business in a school zone (not on school property) may possess a firearm.
In addition, teachers and other school personnel may keep a firearm locked in a locking compartment of a motor vehicle while parked on campus.
A school in Georgia includes public and private schools, colleges, and technical schools..."
In many states, hospitals themselves are gun free zone, for the good guys that is.
