What now for survivors of Haitis worst earthquake in 200 years?
Amid the rubble, tens of thousands of people are feared dead. Many of those now sleeping outside on the streets of Port-au-Prince have lost everything.
Triggering a tsunami watch in parts of the Caribbean, the 7 magnitude quake was also felt in the Dominican Republic. But it escaped the disaster that engulfed its neighbour.

It is truly sad. I hope however not too early to let our government know our tax dollars should not be used to rebuild the palace of a corrupt king.
Wont that be grand.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Obama does move forward with his SPF plan, declaring that the US needs the ability to help people in a disaster.
Abroad or at home, the SPF stands ready to exert control over unruly citizens.
Shouldn’t that be UN soldiers?
Would be not be suprising all if the US military will be called in to keep order.
Ever notice how when something ‘bad’ happens in Haiti that the neighboring Dominican Republic never seems to be affected (or mentioned). Now I’m sure that the quake must have been felt there, but you don’t seem to be hearing the level of official panic from that country.
I expect to see thousands brought to the U.S.
I visited Haiti in 1978.I never saw such poverty in my life,
and this was after a tour in Vietnam.
There is no ‘standing’ UN force for something like this. Troops, units & equipment must first be ‘contributed’, then they have to be assembled, and so on.
What will happen (I predict) is that US forces will go to Haiti to do the intial dirty-work. This will be repairing infrastructure, providing security for aid workers (riot control), etc. At some point Obama will turn the operation over to the UN along with the control of US forces in-country. A few platoons of other nationalities may eventually arrive.
Don’t we still have “peacekeeping” forces there?
My son has received his change of station orders, and is expected to have to deploy to Afghanistan sometime towards the end of this year. I hope he doesn’t end up deployed to Haiti and placed under UN control. Things might be more dangerous there than in Afghanistan.
UN troops have been there for years. They are still there.
‘feared’ dead, ‘may be’ dead (which also means ‘may not be’ ).....
What happened to actual reporting of ‘news’.?
It died in 2008
Please no more pressure on obama he will implode
I guess they’ve been there since the Cedras-Aristide dispute? Wonder how many? What mission they are equipped for, etc.
Just heard on the news that US troops will be sent on the local news.
Unless aid is distributed by US forces directly to the victims, that aid will be stolen by Haiti’s military or by organized criminals — that is how it always happens in turd world countries. How many billions of our dollars will Obama fritter away this time?
"...Haiti Gets $25M
PORT-AU-PRINCE The World Bank last week announced $25 million in additional emergency grants for Haiti to support recovery and rebuilding efforts, and strengthen its capacity to cope with natural disasters, in the wake of a devastating series of storms that hit the country. The grants will fund rebuilding of major bridges and rehabilitation work on key infrastructure destroyed from August to September, as Haiti was battered by a succession of four tropical storms and hurricanes, displacing or directly affecting 800,000 people. "Haiti must be given a chance. The international community needs to step up to the challenge and support the efforts of the Haitian Government and its people," said the World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick. The funding will support existing programs aimed at reducing the vulnerability to natural disasters and strengthen its ability to respond to them, according to a public document issued by the World Bank on its website. "This $25 million grant is part of the Bank's support for Haiti's development, and in particular, for its recovery following the devastating impact of Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike," added Mr. Zoellick, who plans to visit the country later this month. The document stated that in the last three years the Bank had approved $240 million in assistance to Haiti, including a recent $10 million emergency grant (Global Programme) to help the Government respond to the food crisis."

This is just to correct the sentence from the previous comment: It will be time for them to gain back what they have lost for long time, Pride and Respect.
« Louis G. Abraham wrote on Thursday, Jan 08 at 10:00 AM » Once again, sending money to Haiti has been a big mistake since the day one. Why? Because it's never been used for the purpose that it was sent for which helping people in need. If a country really want to help Haiti, it should send its own people to do the work. I am Haitian and it hurts me to see that things are going from bad to worse back home. Why? because our goverment is completely conrupted and has become irresponsible. I have a message for my people but I need first for them to be conscient of our situation. A real leader will come and when he does, it will be time for CHANGE in all sense of the word. It will be time for them to gain back when they have lost for long time, Pride and Respect. It will be time for them to stay home because they will have sufficient resources to live and build a future. That leader will need help from all and every haitians around the world, rich and poor because he is going to face a big challenge.
Soon, I will send my e-mail so that my people can share their opinions and point of views with me.
