High Robbery Rate Gives NBA Players Reason to Carry Arms
Fox News ^ | Sunday, January 10, 2010 | John R. Lott Jr. and Roger Lott

Some people ask why a man who stands 6-foot-4, weighs 215 pounds and doesn't have an ounce of fat on him needs to carry a gun.

But Gilbert Arenas is not an anonymous physical specimen. He's a player for the NBA's Washington Wizards. And statistics show that the point guard's fame and recognition make him much more likely than the average man on the street to become the victim of a violent crime.

Arenas, who has no previous criminal record, was indefinitely suspended without pay Wednesday by NBA Commissioner David Stern for bringing unloaded guns into his team's locker room. Federal and local authorities are looking into criminal charges, particularly possible violations of the District of Columbia's strict gun laws.

In suspending Arenas, Stern said: "The possession of firearms by an NBA player in an NBA arena is a matter of the utmost concern to us."

While Stern was originally expected to wait for the outcome of the investigations before acting, he reportedly felt compelled to suspend Arenas immediately when the extent of Arenas' actions — and his consequent behavior — became known. . . .

I have no problem with NBA players carrying firearms. So long as they follow the same rules as the rest of us — have at it.

I do, however, have a problem with them drawing a firearm on a fellow player, while at the workplace, over a gambling dispute. Mocking the commissioner’s leniency by taking pictures with teammates with your figers in the shape of a gun is also probably not too bright.

When was the last time a professional athlete prevented a crime with a gun, as opposed to committing one?

That’s what is great about this country. Nobody needs a reason to carry a gun.

Then he should take 100K of the millions he earns a year and hire a bodyguard. If I pulled a gun in DC my a** would be in jail, so should he.

A golf web site where better players, club pros and guys on the junior tours makes jokes about Michael Jordan. He goes around golf courses looking to play people for money but he often fails to pay off his bets. His golf game is not as good as he thinks it is.

Ex-Giant linebacker and pro bowler Lawrence Taylor says he has made a lot of money of Jordan on the course. Oddly, Jordan always seems to pay LT.

Back when LT was still playing, I saw him on one of the "Giants Weekly" local shows. He bet the guy interviewing him that he could drive a golf ball from one end zone out of Giants Stadium completely at the other end of the stadium.

It was in the parking lot on his second try.

LOL!
He has had his persoanl problems but I like LT better than Barkely or Jordan. Barkley just runs his mouth and Jordan is an arrogant jerk. I mention those two because they are golf nuts.
