In the days since floating a possible run for Kirsten Gillibrands senate seat, Harold Ford Jr. former Democratic congressman from Tennessee, current vice chairman at Merrill Lynch, dashing MSNBC talking head and the partys next great black hope has already upended New York politics. This week, Mayor Bloomberg, along with high-powered members of the Democratic Partys machine, telegraphed their support for a Ford candidacy; one day later, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Gillibrand supporter, told Ford to back off. By late Thursday, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid had asked Bloomberg to stay out of it, and by Friday afternoon, Ford Jr. otherwise silent on the issue issued a statement saying he is not going to be bullied.
All this sturm und drang is fascinating, given two salient facts: In the year since her appointment by the deeply unpopular Gov. David Paterson, Gillibrand has proven distasteful to the party faithful, who view her as far too conservative. And she has failed to win over the electorate at large. (Most recently, Gillibrand drew local criticism for supporting the health care bill while not seeming to understand just what it would cost the city, telling the Post only that it is good for New York while declining to discuss it in detail.)
Into this void steps Harold Ford Jr. On paper, he seems a dream candidate for the state of New York: A stylish, cultured, incredibly telegenic African-American politician whose profile is both high (he is chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council) and low (no one outside of Tennessee really knows that much about him).
So: Just who is Harold Ford Jr., and what exactly does he believe?

It’s obvious he just doesn’t have the fire in his belly to do it. That was plain to see in the Presidential campaign.
Come on. Don't you know Ford is just a "good ole boy" and really one of us? {/sarcasm}
HMMM but is he “light skin and speaks without a negro accent except when he wants to”? /sarc
Didn’t the Ford family have some problems in Tenn?

Emily Threlkeld Marrying Harold Ford Jr
By Beth Shaw
Emily Threlkeld is taking one of the most eligible political bachelors off the market by marrying Former Congressman Harold Ford, Jr.
###
Twenty-six year old Emily Threlkeld works in the fashion industry as a public relations person. Shes currently working for clothing designer Carolina Herrera in New York. Shes also going to be marrying former Democratic Congressman from Tennessee, the 37-year-old Harold Ford, Jr. Word is they are getting married this weekend.
Harold Ford, Jr. has been considered one of the most eligible bachelors in politics for years. With his high profile, good looks and genteel southern charm, its only natural that hes been subjected to all sorts of rumors about his love life.
As is evidenced by the campaign video under the fold, his appeal to women and reputation as a bit of a ladies man (to put it mildly) has been used as fodder for his opponents in campaigns. Interestingly, hes done a pretty good job of keeping his relationship with Emily Threlkeld private.
Its not that people didnt know about her, its just that there has been virtually no gossip about their relationship and theyve been dating three years!
For all the time theyve been dating and her career in the fashion world, I can only find a couple of pictures of her on the internet. Thats so weird. Youd think people would have been sneaking around trying to catch him in a compromising position all these three years. Apparently not.
I guess since hes not CURRENTLY a Congressman and failed in his last attempt to win a seat in Senate, the paparazzi have hounded other potential sources of gossip. Still, these two seem like the perfect couple for huge amounts of gossip and photos all over the place. They have it all.
Really. Unless, of course, its because there are some in the black community that feel hes abandoned his black heritage by marrying a white woman. Theres some real hostility about that on the internet and Ive read quite a few that claim hes not black enough.
Whatever the case, there are rumors that he has his eye on the governors mansion in Tennessee if not another Senate race. Now hes settling down and will probably drop his playboy image and apparently Emily Threlkeld will be at his side.
We dated a little over two and a half years, said Ford, 37, a former congressman and current Democratic Party leader who ran for U.S. Senate last year. We dated throughout my campaign.
I didnt appreciate the demands on her just because I was so focused on the race. She was so incredibly supportive and generous with her patience and, more than that, showed a love toward me that I didnt really fully appreciate until after the race.
It wasnt long after I met her that I knew it was something special, Ford said. Its the longest relationship Ive ever been in. It wasnt until after the race that I realized I was more than ready to go to the next level with her and I was ready to share the rest of my life with her.

Well, he’s just into everythiing New York elite, isn’t he?
I’ve always liked Ford-—when he was in Congress and on TV a lot he was always pleasant. IOW, he doesn’t “act like” a Dem...no anger or bitterness.
He sure is ... he’s quite the climber .. ;)
He thinks he can hide what he is a left wing crook. He paid for his fancy Armani suits out of his campaign money. He recently married, she was not an African-American.
I thought all the universities and colleges were broke and begging for more money and increasing tuitions? Yet they have $34G to give to harold for an OUT of State political office!
Typical left winger, who just learned to talk softly like O and say nothing. mmm reminds me very much of O speaking when I hear JR speaking.
It’s not even advisory. It is purely a payback position.
“Honestly, hes always struck me as a decent guy. (of course his family has a somewhat checkered past)”
The nut doesn’t fall far from the tree. The Ford family is one of the most crooked in the state, right after the Gore family, and has the same feelings of entitlement as the Gores.
