How this suicide bomber opened a new front in Al-Qaeda’s war
The Sunday Times (UK) ^ | January 10, 2010 | Christina Lamb and Miles Amoore

New details have emerged of the failures that led to the deaths of seven CIA agents in Afghanistan. Christina Lamb and Miles Amoore report

It was the week after Christmas and there was a line of paper Santas hanging in the small chow house at Forward Operating Base Chapman, sent to Afghanistan by loved ones back home.

Among the CIA agents waiting in the morning chill, amid the exercise bicycles and weights, were a mother of three and a father of three who had had to tell their children they would not be home for Christmas.

This was not the first time since 9/11 that they had been stuck on some remote base in Afghanistan. But this time they believed the sacrifice would be worth it, for they believed they were about to land the biggest present imaginable to an American intelligence agent.

Hunting down Osama Bin Laden has recently been given new urgency by President Barack Obama, anxious for some kind of victory that would enable him to pull out troops from Afghanistan.

Now, eight years after losing the trail in the mountains of Tora Bora, it suddenly seemed that US intelligence workers had got the piece of luck they had been praying for.

The CIA deputy country director had flown in from Kabul, CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, was alerted and the White House was on notice to expect a call.

The mother of three — the agency chief at Chapman — had spent the past 14 years of her life tracking Bin Laden and this was the moment she had been waiting for. An original member of Alec Station, the CIA team dedicated to hunting the Al-Qaeda leader, she had an “encyclopaedic knowledge” of Al-Qaeda, according to colleagues.

this administration is opening the door wide for m ore of the same and offering them a free ticket to the states and citizenship in a few weeks =

This plan was announced just before the CIA bomber - and every story on the CIA bomber should include this open door insanity. One could almost wonder if this cockamamie plan wasn't cooked up between foreign and 'domestic' enemies...to provide a clear road for getting to the states for more of the same.

Thanks E. This guy did not get turned by the goons in Pakistan. He was already a jihadist. This crap about how some government turns around these types is BS. It is not like he was some kid, with no learning, no sense of world history that could be educated, perhaps given a job, shown one can live earned one's way through life, and obtain blessings.
This guy had carefully planned out how he was going to take out some key figure(s) in the CIA. He succeed. He hated America and all it stands for based on his cult's teachings.

One of the people killed in the terrorist attack was a member of the Jordanian Royal family. He was probably the liaison officer from the Jordanian intelligence who originally recruited the terrorist as a double agent to find Zawahiri and other Al Qaeda terrorist leaders but he ended up being a full pledged Al Qaeda terrorist. The terrorist himself is Jordanian but not related to the Royal family.

There are some real concerns raised by this attack.

First, to set these guys up as a top level source the jihadist had to have members of their own leadership targeted for drone attacks. These leaders would have to be killed or wounded in these attacks in order to build their double agents “street creed”. It was his passed record of success that got him the meeting.

Think of the planning and cold blooded nature of what was done. The enemy proves again they are not stupid. Our efforts go into filing criminal charges against Navy SEAL’s because a know enemy leader gets a bloody lip.

Second, the enemy is fighting for God. Even if we don't believe this they sure do. If you are going to turn a jihadist what do we have to offer? Material stuff? An American passport? Money? We can't even agree that we are in a war. How do we convince someone to turn against everything and everyone they know, love, and believe. When our own President cannot commit to a full out war effort. We lost a lot of very good people in this attack. We we will continue to do so until we stop allowing our values to be used as a weapons against us and start understanding that this enemy will not be bought off. They do not have to be arrested, they have to be defeated and destroyed!

Hell it is probably worse than that. We could have been played in a power struggle to allow someone to clean house in the terrorist camps and then use their man to take out some high level CIA folks. Damn shame.
