Hurricane Propels Jackson's Justice Quest at EPA (Super Duper Socialist Barf Alert)

NEW ORLEANS – More than four years after Hurricane Katrina, the single-story brick rancher in Pontchartrain Park where Lisa Perez Jackson grew up stands empty.

Floodwaters long ago ate away the walls of her corner bedroom, where the current head of the Environmental Protection Agency once hung Michael Jackson and Prince posters and studied her way to the top of her high school class.

Faded spray paint, left by search teams to indicate that no bodies were found, serves as a reminder of the day Jackson evacuated her mother, Marie, to Bossier City ahead of the approaching storm.

Katrina was the closest that an environmental disaster had hit home for someone who has spent her career solving environmental problems. Now, she's in charge of ensuring that all communities are equally protected from pollution.

Notice how she segues into ‘pollution’ causing hurricanes.

That’s the new push, CO2 is pollution.

I say OK, liberals stop exhaling.

There shouldn’t even be a Federal EPA.

“Katrina was the closest that an environmental disaster had hit home for someone who has spent her career solving environmental problems.”

Katrina hit a good ways away from her “home”, the tragedy that struck NOLA was the result of decades of government corruption and graft that left New Orleans unable to withstand the weaker side of Katrina that hit them. I feel very sorry for those poor people, no doubt, but I feel much much sorrier for what will happen if they do get hit by the big one.

No kidding. How about *this* part:

Months after Katrina hit, Jackson was under consideration to be environmental chief for New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine — a job she later took — and she couldn't get back to New Orleans when her mother returned to Pontchartrain Park to clean up.

The house, like many in the neighborhood, was filled with 6 feet to 8 feet of water. There was no flood insurance to cover the damage, so Jackson's mother eventually sold the home to the state.

Jackson hasn't forgotten the photograph of her mother sent to her by the Catholic charity that helped gut her house. It shows Marie Perez in a wheelchair watching as all the belongings collected over her life were removed. She also can't forget how she was unable to financially help her mother to rebuild.

So - MONTHS after the storm, Jackson still hadn't found the time to help her mother go through that house and look for what little might be salvageable.

And - Jackson didn't hire anyone to go clean the house out; she waited for a charitable organization to go do it.

My favorite part - NO FLOOD INSURANCE. Sorry, but I just don't have any sympathy for idiots. My mother's house, in a different part of New Orleans, was similarly damaged. However, I made sure that she had adequate insurance on the home and on the contents.

She "couldn't help her mother financially"? Hell, I thought she was one of Tulane University's star graduates. Looks like she's just another loser who happened to hit the big time with a plum political appointment.

“There shouldn’t even be a Federal EPA.”

We have a winner! The EPA is anti-Constitutional. And, so are many other departments, agencies, bureaus and offices run under the auspices of the Federal government.

Wow, the search teams were making sure no bodies were found, before the storm had even arrived!

Hmmmm ....

Corps of Engineers contrite for Katrina flooding

Corps vows to prepare better on first day of 2006 hurricane season

updated 4:29 p.m. CT, Thurs., June 1, 2006

NEW ORLEANS - A contrite U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took responsibility Thursday for the flooding of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina and said the levees failed because they were built in a disjointed fashion using outdated data.

“This is the first time that the Corps has had to stand up and say, ‘We’ve had a catastrophic failure,”’ Lt. Gen. Carl Strock, the Corps chief, said as the agency issued a 6,000-page-plus report on the disaster on Day 1 of the new hurricane season.

The Corps said it will use the lessons it has learned to build better flood defenses.

“Words alone will not restore trust in the Corps,” Strock said, adding that the Corps is committed “to fulfilling our important responsibilities.”

The $19.7 million report includes details on the engineering and design failures that allowed the storm surge to overwhelm New Orleans’ levees and floodwalls Aug. 29.

Many of the findings and details on floodwall design, storm modeling and soil types have been released in pieces in recent months as the Corps sought to show it was being open about what went wrong. But the final report goes into greater depth.

The Corps, Strock said, has undergone a period of intense introspection and is “deeply saddened and enormously troubled by the suffering of so many.”

Katrina damaged 169 miles of the 350-mile hurricane system that protects New Orleans and was blamed for more than 1,570 deaths in Louisiana alone.
