SYDNEY (AFP) – A high-tech protest boat sank without trace on Friday after a dangerous collision with a Japanese whaling ship, as Australia protested to Tokyo over its fleet's alleged tactics.

Peter Hammarstedt, first officer of the Sea Shepherd group's "Bob Barker" ship, said the celebrated "Ady Gil" was abandoned overnight after a tow line snapped en route to an Antarctic research base.

In the last video the Ady Gil is seen shooting some type of laser at the Japanese before the collision incident.

“I wouldn’t think a “super” boat would sink that fast.”

Remember the Titanic...

Things that make you go Hmmmmmmm. Who funds a “high-tech protest boat”?

Sea Shepherd claims to have saved hundreds of whales by chasing the Japanese fleet over a six-year campaign backed by Hollywood A-listers including Sean Penn, Martin Sheen and Pierce Brosnan.

If they prevent the slaughter of one whale, who is the loser?

Please stop wailing, it's not becoming.

” Why are you people cheering for the thugs?”

I would agree with you here. I have a great dislike for both sides, however. The protesters are wrong in their tactics, since the Japs are doing what they are doing through a “legal loophole”. Stop the whaling. Stop the Japs. Close the loophole and make them the pariahs that they are. Let both side stew in their blubber. Both sides are thugs.

Actually, whaling is a legal industry in Japan, they are allowed to do it in Japanese waters as well as international waters.

Secondly, the conservation boat did was a violation of the international rules of the road. That boat held the whaling vessel on its starboard side. In this case it must yeild the right away to this whaling vessel. Instead it drove dangerously in front of the vessel, and the engine “broke down”.

I do not condone a boat getting run over, and peoples lives put in jeopardy. However, this conservation group did this to themselves, just like the Somali pirate put themselves in danger when they attempt to pirate.

I believe these whalers are hard working fishermen that have better things to do at sea than run over the bat boat. If the conservation group has a problem with whaling they should deal with it in a legal manner and get the law changed.

Interesting. The BatBoat has no wake until just before the collision, it which point it seems to put the throttle to “full”.
