$1.5-$2 million dollar sea conservation anti-whaling stealth boat rammed by Japanese vessel, Shonan Maru. The Sea Shepherd's Ady Gil stealth said probably unsalvageable, crew members were rescued, one New Zealand woman claimed broken ribs. The crew on the Shepherd partnering Bob Barker watched in horror as the Ady Gil was cut in half. The Ady Gil was said to have launched small foul smelling projectiles at the Japanese vessel and attempted to entangle its' propellers with ropes. The Japanese responded with water hoses and said the Ady Gil got too close. The protestors said they will continue their protests, and that the Japanese had stooped to hostility and violence to get what they want. Protestors had put out a distress signal and call it a hit and run, a major maritime event. The conservation group also claims the Japanese are also refueling in a protected Penguin area. Australian airports are used by the Japanese researchers to launch planes to spy on the protestors.
The Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett said the government had declared war on the Japanese whalers. Garrett called on all parties to have restraint. The protestors blame the Aussie government for ignoring or showing restraint of the situation for 3 years. "The Price Is Right" game show and a longtime animal rights activist, Bob Barker donated the money for the fleet. Barker, 86, said he was "genuinely proud" to be associated with Sea Shepherd."
Each side routinely accuses the other of dangerous activity during what has become a cat-and-mouse chase in one of the world's most remote regions.
The smaller ship, as noted by others, clearly powered up to continue putting the bow in the path of the larger ship.
The adi was at speed and cut across the bow of the whaler. The captain of the adi should have his ass kicked by the crew.A unarmed wooden boat going up against steel ships. Not too smart.
I know enough about boating and ships to say: Don’t tell me you couldn’t get your smaller craft out of the way of the substantially larger craft, and that you were idle, when I can see your prop wash in the video.
Check out this split video (shows it from 2 angles) with colorful commentary from frustrated leftists:

Notice how the Japanese boat keeps spraying water, even with the Ada Gil damaged and sinking!
And here’s one of the choice comments from the National Post website:
“I think the Japanese whaling is perhaps disingenuous but these eco-terrorists play dangerous games and should expect others might call their bluff.
A boat that set a world speed record for circumnavigating the earth and is highly maneuverable gets run over by a lumbering very large ship. Hmmm... either the eco-terrorists are really incompetent navigators or just plain stupid.
Either way they got what they deserved and it’s high time.”
Also, the admission by the anti-whaling people that they were attempting to foul the props of the Japanese boat with heavy ropes certainly makes them guilty of attempted murder.
It appears to me that the trimaran hit the whaler. A big ship cannot change direction on a dime.
I think my post back in November where I supposed that the pilot of the renamed EarthRace speedboat that costs hundreds of thousands a year to maintain would ram it into a Japanese ship turned out to be right about on the money.
That it happened when the other Sea Shepherd ship, the Bob Barker, was just in the perfect spot to video it, in clear daylight, while all previous Sea Shepherd statements indicated they’d use the supposed radar absorbing black paint to turn the boat into a stealth craft, to surprise the Japanese when they least expected it, is rather supportive of the idea that this was far from an accident or Japanese action, but an event staged by Sea Shepherd, endangering the lives of the crew (and a probably rather miffed Animal Planet videographer.)
It will be quite interesting to see how it is portrayed on Whale Wars this summer. Myself, I’d really like to see the raw footage reels, especially on Paul Watson’s ship, and listen in on any phone calls he might have gotten in the minutes before collision.
I like whales. Having said that, the folks “driving” the Sea Shepherd are raving lunatics. What sort of nutballs would play chicken with a substantially larger vessel, all while navigating(?) in arctic waters.
They’re idiots, pure and simple and quite fortunate to still be alive. They are definitely Darwin Award material.
Oh my... a ‘protected penguin area’... You don’t say.
The unmitigated horror.
I like that they got hosed even after the collision!
As much as I enjoy seeing the econuts getting slammed, I think this was all a fund raising scheme hatched up by them.
This is going to rake in millions, maybe even tens of millions, far more than the cost of the boat.
and some facewash after the ram job....
keep it up Japan! LOL
Love every minute of it. They should have turned hard to port and then ran into the disabled vessel and seen how the “fish are people too” crowd likes it.
They are putting the people of the fishing vessel at risk of death with their actions. They deserve that which they reaped.
The Ady claimed it was trying to back up, but was also claimed to be stationary.
I bet that a nice his res photo of the event will be up on the internet soon as an "Epic Fail" poster!

This was before they painted it black, added more carbon fiber to the nose (didn't help), and painted a JOLLY ROGER on it.
.
And added a sixteen speakers/sound system on the rear of the fins to blast sound at the whales and scare the poop out of them.
The protesters rammed the fishing boat. The protesters are all about PR and confrontation.
Watch the protesters boat speed up and lurch into the fishing vessel.
That video almost illustrates the incident when Jack Kennedy piloted his PT boat in front of a Japanese destroyer(?).
In this case the burdened boat was the smaller boat, based on the lack of comparably maneuverability of the larger boat.
- Every vessel must proceed at a safe speed at all times. Several factors should be considered when
determining safe speed, including but not limited to the state of visibility, traffic density, your vessel’s maneuverability, with special reference to stopping distance and turning ability. At night, consider the
presence of background lights such as those from shore, or from the back-scatter of your vessel’s own
lights. Consider also the state of wind, sea, and current, and the proximity of navigational hazards.
- The Rules specifically require that any action taken to avoid collision, if the circumstances allow, will be
positive, made in ample time, and in keeping with good seamanship. Any changes in course or speed
should be large enough to be readily apparent to the other vessel. This means that you should avoid last
second changes in course, and you should avoid a small series of changes. Change direction early, and
make a large turn.
