WASHINGTON (Reuters) The White House was poised to release a report on Thursday that top aides said will shock Americans about security lapses that allowed a Nigerian man to come close to blowing up a Detroit-bound airliner on December 25.
President Barack Obama, in remarks scheduled for 4:30 p.m. EST (2130 GMT), was set to outline steps the U.S. government is taking to try to shore up airline security, mindful of the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States involving hijacked airliners.
The White House was due to release a declassified review of what went wrong to allow the Christmas Day bombing attempt in which Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, is accused of trying to detonate explosives sewn into his underwear.
By releasing the review, Obama may be seeking to limit the political damage to his administration ahead of expected congressional committee reviews of the attempted attack.
Republicans have sought to portray the Democratic president as weak on national security issues. Obama already has acknowledged a security "screw-up" in the December 25 incident.
White House national security adviser James Jones told USA Today of the report: "Once people read it, I think, there's a certain shock to it. ... The man in the street will be surprised that, you know, these correlations weren't made."
What was shocking, said another official, was the fact that various strands of intelligence were available that, if put together properly, would have made clear that the bombing suspect should have been put on a "no-fly" list preventing him from boarding.

My thoughts too. How is he going to blame Bush or the people in the US. He will blame something other than himself.
President Bush was able to keep us safe and that's all we really asked.
The difference is: Bush put the USA and its' people FIRST!!
Keep it up!

Just positioning to “blame” everyone and everything they can for their OWN INCOMPETENCE AND LACK OF ANY CARE ABOUT AMERICAN SECURITY AND DEFENSE.
Nothing new here, move along.
I have no doubt when Barry talks about this he’ll do another of his obligatory “history” lessons to put this in “context” which, of course, is that it’s all Bush’s fault.
I’m sure the lack of Collective Bargaining amongst the airport personnel creates a unproductive work environment.
I’m sure this sort of thing will never happen again if we would only allow airport screeners aroung the globe to join SEIU.
Pointing the finger of blame at subordinates is a serious Leadership flaw. And it is guaranteed to have a significant, immediate and permanent effect on Loyalty. It is prejudicial to good organizational discipline.
Anybody who has ever done any form of Leadership before — whether that is leading a Boy Scout troup or being Manager at McDonalds or running a multinational corporation or a platoon of soldiers — knows this.
Obama doesn’t seem to know this. The implications of this fact are obvious.
This is a real worry. He’s supposed to be your “Leader”. How did this happen?
Norm we are a forgiving people...this will be his one and only shot at getting it right.......IF there is another attempt and god forbid...it works...........Obama is toast.
Its not in Ole Jug Ears persona to grovel etc. Being the narcissist he is it’ll be someone else’s problem. The matter in question is who will get the blame and ultimately who will be fired. That said the entire apparatus was put into play by a dem Congress and Mr. Bush. It was only a matter of time before the curtain got pulled down. Enven w/ all the breast beating nothing substantive is going to change. We’ll still be in the same boat and the ROPers know it. The only clueless in this affair is our govt and the libs who believe we can al get along together.

They are feigning “shock”, trying to give the people a ‘head-fake’ into thinking ‘they’re going to get it right the next time’. But, to prove these scoundrels dont give goat’s fart about anything > you wont’ see anyone fired over this.
The Christmas Dud
The only bigger dud than the bomb that didnt blow up NW 253 on Christmas was the response from Premier Hussain. His White Elephant was a regifting of the listless Ft Hood tome. After taking 4 days to make sure that he had all the proper PC bumper sticker cliches to not insult the Mooselimbs he underlines the fact that we are no longer serious about stopping terrorism, only judicating them. Under obozo we are now no different than a woman whos ex-boyfriend threatened to kill her and has a Restraining Order for her protection. America would prefer that a squad car sat at the curb than wait til shes dead to arrest him. We would rather we fought terrorism w/the FBI or Pentagon rather than the DOJ.
