More than two dozen youths and advocates gathered in front of the criminal courts building in downtown Los Angeles to support two young males who were sentenced today to 50 years to life in prison for a fatal drive-by shooting.
A jury convicted Steven Menendez, 17, and Jose Garcia, 19, of murder in July in the March 2007 death of 16-year-old Danny Saavedra.
Saavedra was playing basketball in the 500 block of 82nd Street in South Los Angeles when he was shot in what police described as a gang-related attack. Afterward, officers pursued a vehicle matching the description of the one used in the killing, and when Garcia and Menendez got out, they were arrested.
Both later said they were just passengers and identified the shooter as Noel Velasco, a 26-year-old member of the Street Villains gang. Velasco was never charged and was shot to death three months later.
Saavedras parents and siblings spoke at the sentencing and told prosecutors they considered the sentence appropriate, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the district attorneys office.
These were two admitted gang members who went into rival gang territory, and they drove around not once but twice, slowed down and shot and killed a 16-year-old boy who had no gang connection, Robison said.

Let’em rot.
Lock ‘em up so deep ya gotta pump air in....
I no longer care about the plight of minorities in this country.
They (as with all of us) are the architects of their own misery.
Never charged, yet Justice was served.
I disagree.. they ought to shoot them and save the tax payer’s money.
I’ll do ya one better...death by drive by...put ‘em in a large fenced in yard, and have cars drive by and shoot at them...allow them to duck, dodge and hide as long as they can until they are shot to death....let the parents and relatives of the deceased do the drive by’s...
Guess the gangsta-thug life sucks. Would assume such a lifetstyle has a major Darwin component attached to it anyway.
I am sure two grandmothers were there dressed in rags and saying what good kids they were, and how badly they were treated in this country.
Hang ‘em ,High.
And, like China, bill their family for the bullet.
Tell you what, it may be very draconian and harsh to say this, but you start publically hanging these individuals and I am near certain that the message will be sent that this type garbage is not and will not ever be deemed or viewed as acceptable. It is time that examples are made and made in such a way that a clear and distinct message is sent ... and understood.
How long does the guy they shot have to stay dead?
The libtards (supported by our PC attitudes & sheer laziness) have let the “trash” bloom in this country. Gone are personal accountability and simple family values. Hard to have family when you can’t name your father isn’t it? We have created 3 generations of entitled welfare and protected them thru outlandish laws and penalties to the just. We’ve spent $15T since 1965 to “help” these people. How’s that worked out? And to compound it, we have let this rabble gain control and now they have their messiah in the WH. Sorry for the rant. Just tired of watching our country go into the shi**er. I’d shoot all the miscreants.
The Chinese have a saying: “punish one educate many”. I’m all for it.
They learn much more in the community about what it means to be a good human being than they do in prison, McGill said.”
How’d that work out?
And no backup generator for the air pump. Let them spend their time hoping the power doesn’t fail, in NIMBYized Kalifornia.
Never met a live gang member I liked.
But this is in California. 50 to life means probable parole in about 90 days or whenever the state government employees need another pay raise. Then it is “open the prison doors!”
