Gov. Bill Ritter Jr. of Colorado, whose election in 2006 was hailed by Democrats as a threshold moment of renaissance for their party in a region where Republicans had long ruled the roost, said on Wednesday that he would not seek a second term.
At a news conference at the state capitol, Mr. Ritter said he wanted to find a better balance in life and spend more time with his family. He said that being unencumbered by the demands of a campaign would also allow him the freedom to make the difficult tough decisions about the state budget that will be required in the coming months without worrying so much about political considerations.
This decision allows me to make my family a priority, he said. Quite frankly, they need me.
Mr. Ritter, 53, would have faced a tough re-election race in November, with an apparently unified Republican party against him, a somewhat divided Democratic party on his flanks and a state still stumbling economically. Even so, the news of his decision not to run shook Colorado politics, and shifted the dynamics of the fall contest, which will no longer include an incumbent for better or worse to rally behind or to attack.

LOL! Dropping like flies.
More bilge rats jumping from the transom.
Must have been video of him and his reputed girlfriend, Stephanie Villafuerte. (She worked for him in DA’s office before he became governor. Took leave of absence to work on his campaign. Was then nominated to justice dept. Withdrew because serious questions were going to be asked by ‘pubs on committee. Lied to FBI in Cory Voorhees case. Rumors of $30,000 campaign funds taken and replaced later. Culture of corruption)
Sure hope all this oozes out. I want to see them leave in disgrace.
What on earth happened to all those articles and tv segments asking if the Republican party was officially dead???
And then have them wake up the morning after the election in complete shock and dismay. :)
Do you have a link to that blog posting? I need a good laugh.
The Donk Congresscommie from Hawaii...HAWAII.! Just announced his resignation..Election to replace in May...If the state can come up with the money for election.
will Tom Tancredo run?
Do you have the numbers on how many Democrats vs Republicans are retiring? How about on how many incumbent races have a Republican at risk of losing a seat vs. Democrat incumbents running?
For the Senate, IIRC...
19 GOP Senate seats to be defended; 17 Dem ones, right? And of those Dem ones, four of them are in NY, California, and Wisconsin.
In 6 of the GOP ones, the incumbent is retiring.
Only 3 of the Dem seats are retiring.
Even with overwhelming anti-Dem sentiment, the 6-year terms mean that possible GOP gains are limited.
It was a thread on Daily Kos.
