Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon, convicted last month on one count of embezzlement, is stepping down.
WBAL AM-1090 reported Wednesday afternoon Dixon would leave office Feb. 4.
The decision by Dixon, a Democrat, was revealed Wednesday as her lawyers were set to argue in court that the mayor deserved a new trial because of juror misconduct. She was scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 21.
Under the state constitution, Dixon would have been required to step down as mayor upon her sentencing, with City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake assuming Dixons mayoral duties. Speculation had run rampant in recent weeks that city leaders were pressing Dixon to resign.
Dixons conviction stemmed from her use of gift cards given to the city by developer Patrick Turner. Turner claimed they were intended for the needy.
The trial offered a window into what critics have long derided as a pay-to-play mentality at City Hall that tarnished Baltimores reputation.
Dixon was the former president of the Baltimore City Council who became mayor in January 2007. She ascended to the top job after then Mayor Martin OMalley became governor, defeating Republican Robert Ehrlich.
Amazingly though, it is not a crime to buy the vote of a United States Senator by offering to have the rest of the states pay for the health care of his state.
I heard this on an ABC News break while listening to Hannity on the radio, they didn’t mention her party affiliation, so right then I knew she had to be a Democrat, and I was right!
“that tarnished Baltimores reputation”
How in the world could Balmore, Merlin’s reputation be tarnished, hon?
Response: She got $450,000,000 in tax free stimulus funds. The money will help her transition into retirement.
Good news for good old Bawlemer!
MD is so corrupt that even the Republicans are bad there.
There was a liberal Republican mayor to the left of the Democrats named Theodore McKeldin in the 1950s. People in Baltimore believe in socialism.
She is resigning so she can still collect her 80k per year pension.
Our moon-bat friend's moon-battier daughter is currently attending Nursing School at Johns Hopkins, and even THEY admit that Baltimore is a horrible place to live. If it's too awful for a moon-bat, the next best thing for that place might be fumigation.
Sheila Dixon, convicted last month on one count of embezzlement... a Democrat... her lawyers were set to argue in court that the mayor deserved a new trial because of juror misconduct... with City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake assuming Dixon's mayoral duties... conviction stemmed from her use of gift cards given to the city by developer Patrick Turner. Turner claimed they were intended for the needy. They didn't actually *reach* the needy, but that's what the intent was. ;')
Check out this map in the Sun of Dec 31, 2009 which illustrates the placement of law enforcement cameras. You will see easily where the "no go" areas are. Unfortunately, some of them are near Johns Hopkins Hospital. Other parts of the city are fine, so far!
I thought she would be in jail by now.
I left Baltimore in 1966 just as the toilet was beginning to flush. There is so much political crap there, that the toilet is still flushing.
I used to know the few honest politicians in Baltimore. Really miss them. After that, only Schaeffer was half decent. The rest, including Nancy Pelosi’s brother, Mayor D’Allessandro, were crooks, ass-kissers, and incompetent.
McKeldin was Governor of MD in the ‘50s (1951-59). He served two separate terms as Baltimore Mayor (1943-47; 1963-67). Both times, McKeldin was succeeded by a D’Alesandro, first Nancy’s daddy, Tom, Jr. (1947-59) and her brother, Tommy 3rd (1967-71).
