The Internal Revenue Service said it will start regulating tax preparation companies for the first time.

Tax preparers will have to register with the federal government and company employees will have to pass competency tests and stay up to date on tax laws by taking 15 hours of classes every year, the IRS announced Monday.

WHY? It is provably impossible to “know” correct from incorrect. As a matter of fact, it is more akin to a belief than a science.

While this is not a bad idea, the added cost will just be passed on to consumers. I think it is a sad comment on the needless complexity of our tax system when average Americans need to rely on expensive tax preparation services.

You can’t have complete idiots preparing your taxes and forgetting that you need to pay social security tax on your income even though your employer explicitly told you that it wasn’t withheld and you need to pay it yourself... no, wait, that idiot is Secretary of Treasury Geithner and his copy of Turbo Tax.

Question: Is Timothy Geithner required to pass competency tests and stay up to date on tax laws by taking 15 hours of classes every year?

Will this also apply to IRS employees? The thought of competent, governmental employees scares me.

H&R Block is in big trouble.

You know little about how the world of Big Government and Big Business Work together. Block already requires this of its preparers and some Block employees teach these classes. So now the little guy will have to pay Block for his continuing education or get out of the business. My guess is that Block Lobbied for this ruling.

We were asked for our “health insurance finance information” by the CPA that oversees our company just this morning.

Intrusive jerks (not our accountant, the government).
