Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (Conn.), a leading Democrat whose political star fell along with the nation's economy, is expected to announce Wednesday that he has decided against running for reelection this November, according to sources briefed on the decision. Dodd, in his fifth term, chairs the Senate Banking Committee. His retirement would be the second such announcement by a Senate Democrat in 24 hours; North Dakota's Byron Dorgan said Tuesday that he would not run this fall.

Were some Dem senators who’s chances of re-election bleak already promised a nice cushy job for their health care vote? I know the usual process is retirement then fat pay check lobbyist job, but might they be fatter and cushier than usual?
More good news tonight.
Hope he is convicted.
It makes me think something is about to come out in the news.
Da rats are shuffling the deck thinking that’s going to save them from 2010.
You nailed it. Their internal polling must be devastating. And you can bet that their inside information on the state of the economy is probably far worse than what is being made public. Some economists are talking about a decade long recession.
The Dems also know that they are engaging in a suicide pact when they approve ObamaCare. When the public starts feeling the impact, they will be at the Capitol building with pitchforks, torches, tar, and feathers.
Have to hand it to the Dims . . . at least they’re disciplined and have enough party loyalty to not run for re-election. Republicans, on the other hand, have to put up with TOTALLY self-servings pols like Burns and Stevens who thought only of themselves.
rats are abandoning the s.s. hopenchange. who is next?
Hopefully, he retires into Gitmo.
Now the Dems don't necessarily have to lose the seats. In Dodd's case, they can run someone who's not conspicuously corrupt. In Dorgan's case they can run someone who isn't tainted by the health care vote, you know, a "fiscally conservative, socially moderate" type who won't let the Left wingers push him/her around.
Perhaps the democrats have decided that fossil imCumbents are set to lose anD that new blood democrats will have a better chance at retaining the seats for the democrats.
I hate to admit it, but if that's the plan, it's a pretty good one. On second thought, it's likely not a plan... more like the fossils don't want to be humiliated at the polls.
It will up to the Republican challengers to hammer home that ALL DEMOCRATS ARE LIBERAL and that Obama's 60 vote senate has to dismantled.
I guess we’ll know soon enough...
Is he sober enough to make the announcement?
While conventional wisdom says that “some” politicians whose party is in power will announce retirement, there seems to be ALOT of dems doing this now. From Connecticut to Michigan to Colorado to Hawaii to North Dakota; it seems there is a whole lot more than average. IMO, there is more to come. What do they see that we don’t? I bet their internal polls are at historic lows. How does this bode for upcoming congressional votes?
What message does this send to “blue dog” dems? Vote for us or less? Or else we will abandon you and leave you high and dry??
abandoning ship all the sudden.
I have been expecting this for some time, they are attempting to get a threefer here, get these guys off the radar, slide in someone who does not have the baggage and prepare for political war, by having these guys working the political process from 2010 through 2013. Democrat and foreign handlers know exactly what is coming, so they need to be taken care of and using their remaining public maturity and profitability, slim as it is, to the best use.
That's exactly what they have to do - but will they? They've got to lay the blame on the party.
LOL.
Soon he’ll be making waitress sandwiches again with his homey Teddy...they’ll probably be some kind of barbeque sandwiches.
