The Solomon Islands archipelago in the Pacific was hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake today, less than an hour after a 6.5-magnitude temblor triggered a warning of possible local tsunamis.
The quake hit at 9:36 a.m. local time (4:36 CST) about 103 kilometers (64 miles) south-southeast of Gizo, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The earthquake was 30.5 kilometers deep.

They have some mighty earthquakes in the Solomons. My father was asleep in his foxhole on Bougainville one night in 1943 and a quake bounced him right out of it.

We felt it here in Reno! The one hand bandits started spilling silver dollars like there was no Milton Friedman, and I grabbed me a couple of handfuls before the security goons arrived and started filling their own pockets!

My father and his buddy were sitting on a fallen tree during the Guadalcanal Campaign in 1942 when they were knocked off backwards. My dad told told me the story that they did not know what they were hit with until they realized that it was a powerful earthquake rather than Jap artillery.
