PASSPORT NUMBER ALSO REVEALED, ZUMUNTA ASSOCIATION USA CONDEMNS ACT

Lagos (THEWILL)- THEWILL has continued to investigate the attempted terrorist attack in the United States by a Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab.

The Director General of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Dr Harold Demuren told journalists on Boxing Day that Umar bought his ticket at the airport office of KLM Airlines in Accra, Ghana without leaving any contact details then returned to Nigeria.

"The ticket information revealed that the ticket was purchased in Accra, for $2, 831, with original routing for Lagos - Amsterdam- Detroit- Amsterdam- Accra, but was later re-issued to read Lagos- Amsterdam- Detroit- Lagos at the KLM office in Lagos. The return leg of the ticket was to set at January 8, 2010 out of Detroit, Michigan.”

CCTV footage and passenger travelling manifest obtained show that he personally checked in at 8.30pm WAT.

The DG said, "He personally checked in at 2035 local time. The passenger did not check in any baggage but was spotted with a shoulder bag. He went through normal screening and check in process. His passport was scanned, his US visa was scanned and the advance passenger information system returned no objection. He was allotted seat number 20B on the Lagos -Amsterdam leg and seat 19A on the Amsterdam - Detroit leg.”

"The passenger possessed a Nigerian machine readable passport issued Sept 15, 2005 to expire Sept 14, 2010 with passport number A3921640. His multiple entry US visa was issued in London, UK, on June 16, 2008 and set to expire June 2010."

“The passenger presented himself to the various security personnel for screening at the airport. Thereafter, he passed through aviation security comprising of walk- through metal detector and baggage X-ray screening machine.”

“He proceeded to the boarding gate where he went through secondary screening as confirmed by KLM officials. At the closure of the departure, passenger was confirmed on board, his name was on the post.”

"We do not know, where the Nigerian got the substance from, but, it is too early to speculate because of on going investigations as we are working very hard to beef up security at all our airports,” he concluded.

A US Congressman, Peter King had alleged that security at Nigerian airports was lax claiming that the US government had given Nigerian Airports millions of dollars in equipment to enable it improve security at the airport but the Nigerian authorities have not done enough.

Meanwhile, Zumunta, an association of Nigerian Northerners in the United States in a statement released by spokesperson, Lami Dongoyaro said,“ We watched with shock and horror the news of attempted terrorist act by a Nigerian on board Northwest/Delta Airline Flight #253 from Amsterdam to Detroit, on December 25, 2009. Zumunta Association strongly condemns any act of terrorism and/or violence in whatever form. Terrorism is an alien concept to Nigerians.

“We are grateful and thankful to God that no one was hurt. We applaud the courage and heroism of some of the passengers who put their lives in danger in subduing the alleged terrorist. Nigerians are peaceful, law abiding and friendly people.

“Zumunta is calling on those concerned, especially the Federal Government of Nigeria, to cooperate fully with authorities to find the cause/s and people responsible for this despicable act. Nigerians in the United States and elsewhere stand ready to do their part in ensuring the safety of lives and property at all times. We hope that this heinous act should not be used as a blanket to judge honorable and hardworking Nigerians

re: There has to be a ‘good’ reason for that

I would feel better about the validity of this particular ‘good’ reason if it were coming from a source other than Obama’s team!

I realize the passport part took place in Amsterdam, but still find it interesting that it was denied, just like the incident in Detroit. An American citizen with nothing to gain by lying or making up a story tells one thing, the same thing, from the first time it's told until the last and yet the authorities tell us something else.

I certainly understand the need to keep some info close to the chest in an investigation like this, but it takes on a different aspect when they do everything bass ackwards in the handling of the ‘suspect’. This guy should have been spirited away under a blanket or something and his cohorts on the other other end should still be asking each other what became of him, and more importantly how much is he telling whoever it it that has him.

It might not be the case at all, but the way they are handling this gives rise to the suspicion that they really have no interest in dealing a serious blow to the terrorists. If you wanted to hide something or interfere with an investigation this is exactly how you would go about it.

GOOD=BAD IMO.

If the ticket was purchased in Ghana as the article indicates, why has that fact NOT been mentioned?

Nigeria says plane bomber began journey in Ghana

The man accused of trying to blow up an airplane spent only 27 minutes in Nigeria during his travels that ended in Detroit, Nigerian officials said.

Al-Qaeda film clip warned of bomb on plane

In the al-Qaeda video, dated 21 December, a man identified as Mohammed al-Kalwi delivered a eulogy for militants killed in a Yemeni air strike on a militant training camp four days earlier. He said: "We are carrying a bomb to hit the enemies of God. O soldiers, you should learn that we do not want to fight you, nor do we have an issue with you. We only have an issue with America and its agents, and beware of standing in the ranks of America."

No letup in flight bomb risk, 3 years after plot

We are still at risk," said security and aviation analyst Chris Yates, noting there is still no widely available system installed at international airports to detect explosives in liquid form, although several technologies are in trials.

Nor is there a widely-deployed technology to routinely guard against a bomber with explosives hidden in a body cavity -- a technique al Qaeda used in August in Saudi Arabia.

Yates said measures taken since September 11 had left air passengers generally no safer. He added: "We're still vulnerable on a whole bunch of levels, whether it be via something taken into the passenger cabin that we can't detect at an airport or something being secreted into the cargo hold."

Al Qaeda leader behind Northwest Flight 253 terror plot was released by US

Guantanamo prisoner prisoner #372, Said Ali Shari was sent to Saudi Arabia on Nov. 9, 2007, according to the Defense Department log of detainees who were released from American custody.

Muslim cleric deported from UK arrested in Kenya

A human rights official says a Jamaica-born Islamic cleric once deported from the UK has been arrested by Kenyan anti-terror police.

Abdullah el-Faisal was arrested Friday in Mombasa after he left a mosque, says Al-Amin Kimathi, executive coordinator of the Muslim Human Rights Forum.

Police told el-Faisal he had violated the terms of his tourist visa by preaching in mosques.

The cleric was sentenced to nine years in British jail in 2003 after being convicted of incitement to murder and stirring racial hatred by urging followers to kill Hindus, Jews and Americans.

YEP. That all adds up, doesn't it? Nine years jail in 2003 and in 2010 he's in Kenya on a tourist visa.

You are exactly right. I find Fred Nerks to be one of the funniest names I ever heard, but then it’s the translation, isn’t it?

Yeah and the Gitmo Jihadi, released and "rehabilititated" in Saudi Arabia so he could plan the undie bomber's mission. In_^*(&^(&_credible! Then on Fox News this AM Obama's spokesman saying they plan to continue doing the same thing (repeatedly hitting themselves in the head with a high heeled shoe, so to speak - but in the process, endangering every American's life everywhere they are accessible to the Gitmo releasees). Gi-normus DUH there. I won't watch them anymore - they defy common sense (using political-speak / doubetalk to protect their butts while they do nothing but continue being politically correct in a world filled with terrorists who want to kill us.

Global Terorism - how is Ghana seen in the picture?

From 2005: Ghana does not have a database of its citizens in any country. Though we might not be able to do it with mathematical exactitude, we could have a close approximation. I must however say that proper mechanisms should be put in place to ensure that unscrupulous government officials both home and abroad do not take advantage of any such exercise to fill their pockets. This will make the intention behind the exercise a fiasco.

The government should also ensure that people who acquire Ghanaian passports are genuine Ghanaians and that they are taking it for themselves and that they actually need it.

Terrorism in Ghana - when is it going to end?

Snips: People should not be allowed to make 'in and out' entry at their whim. As much as Ghanaians continue to welcome foreigners, the nation needs people coming to help to develop the country and enjoy it as well. And not people who enter at will to plunder what they have worked hard for.

Democracy is not for one to do whatever one chooses against soceity and get away with it. Unfortunately, that's how many Ghanaians understand it and have given the same erraneous impression to foreigners who enter the country. Then, they the foreigners send the message home that in the country Ghana you can do what you cannot do over there, in their home countries. Armed robbers get bail when caught, and can bribe their way out to go back terrorizing the people.

Wondering when that re-issued ticket was adjusted?!?

Also wondering, will KLM or Delta/NW airlines refund the return trip fare?

Good job of researching, Fred Nerks

And why?

Man buys ticket in Ghana. Doesn't fly out of Ghana.

Return ticket shows Ghana. Return destination removed/replaced.

Someone in Ghana didn't want to be connected?

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought one of the red flags (that was missed) was that he bought a one way ticket. And wasn't BO in Ghana last summer? Don't know if that means anything...it just came to mind.

Check this out - same day, same country :

DECEMBER 16, 2009 WED : (MUTALLAB TRAVELS TO ETHIOPIA AND THEN GHANA WHERE THE RETURN TICKET FOR HIS TRIP TO DETROIT IS PURCHASED- BUT THE RETURN DESTINATION IS CHANGED FROM ACCRA IN GHANA TO LAGOS IN NIGERIA) He travelled to Ethiopia and then Ghana. The return ticket for his trip to Detroit, via Amsterdam, was bought at KLM’s office in Accra on December 16 for $2,831 (£1,770). Unusually for a potential suicide bomber, he took the trouble to change his return destination, replacing Ghana with Lagos. He arrived in Nigeria on Christmas Eve. .------------ "Abdulmutallab's bomb plans began with classroom defence of 9/11," Times Online ^ | 12/27/2009 | Dominic Kennedy

DECEMBER 16, 2009 WED : (GHANA : US DEA DRUG STING NABS AL QAEDA OPERATIVES OUMAR ISSA, HAROUNA TOURE' AND IDRISS ABELRAHMAN; THEY ARE SHIPPED TO NY-----THE DRUG SMUGGLING WAS INTENDED TO SUPPORT AL QAEDA, AL QAEDA IN THE MAGHREB & FARC ) Osama Bin Laden's terrorist organization has become increasingly reliant on organized crime, including cocaine smuggling, human trafficking and kidnapping, according to a criminal complaint unsealed Friday in Manhattan's federal court. The charges filed against three alleged al-Qaeda associates by the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan is the latest chilling evidence of a convergence between terrorism and organized crime.
Oumar Issa, Harouna Touré and Idriss Abelrahman were snatched in Ghana on Wednesday by a Drug Enforcement Administration sting and shipped to New York, where they arrived on Friday to face charges of conspiracy to commit acts of narco-terrorism and providing material support to al-Qaeda, a terrorist organization. The arrests mark the first time that al-Qaeda associates have been charged with narco-terrorism offenses.

"It's pretty compelling evidence, but not the only evidence that has been growing that al-Qaeda and its affiliates are becoming more and more involved in the global drug trade to help fund their operations," says Michael Braun, former chief of operations at the DEA and a founder of Spectre Group International. JANUARY 3, 2006 FRI : (GHANA : FORMER AIDE TO DEMOCRAT REPRESENTATIVE JOHN CONYERS OF MICHIGAN, DEWAYNE BOYD, IS ARRESTED IN ACCRA) - A former aide to U.S. Rep. John Conyers has been arrested in Africa after skipping his sentencing on a federal fraud conviction, federal authorities said. DeWayne Boyd, 49, formerly of Detroit, was arrested Friday in Accra, Ghana, said Daniel D. Roberts, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit Field Office. Boyd is a former aide to Willie Brown when he was the speaker of the California Assembly.
Boyd was arrested on a warrant for failing to appear at the April sentencing hearing on convictions of mail fraud, making false declarations under oath, making false statements to investigators, bankruptcy fraud and theft of government property.
The government said Boyd stole about $162,000 from four vendors and sponsors of a 1999 conference in New Orleans for black farmers. One sponsor was the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which gave $50,000 for the conference.
Boyd was convicted on Dec. 15, 2004. He was expected to be sentenced to 30 to 46 months in prison.
When Boyd failed to appear at his sentencing, U.S. District Judge Robert H. Cleland in Detroit issued the arrest warrant and canceled his $15,000 personal bond.
He was arrested by FBI agents and Accra [GHANA] police and escorted back to the United States, where he was being held by the U.S. Marshal Service, the FBI said. He appeared in U.S. District Court in New York on Tuesday and will be returned to Michigan for sentencing.
Boyd’s attorney, Martin E. Crandall, said he had not talked to his client and had no immediate comment.
Boyd created and was president of the National Organization of Black Farmers in 1997, when he was an aide to Brown, according to court documents. He was the only signer on its bank account, and the now-defunct organization essentially existed to put on annual conferences, he said in court papers.
Boyd was fired from the office of Conyers, D-Mich., in 2002.
