Ghoulish bid to slap tax on Twin Towers

More than eight years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, New York City authorities are demanding that developer Larry Silverstein fork over almost $35m in commercial rent taxes on the Twin Towers and two other buildings that no longer exist.

The city's reasoning is that Silverstein continued to pay rent to the Port Authority after the towers fell.

That, city officials claim, subjects his transactions to the 3.9 percent commercial rent tax ...

On May 27, 2007, the city's finance department sent Silverstein a bill for $34,866,549 - including penalties and interest - on his four trade center buildings.

City officials asserted that "the airspace that had been surrounded by the buildings still existed" and, since Silverstein had the right to rebuild, he had to pay up.

Silverstein pointed out that the government seized control of the entire site in 2001, so he could hardly rebuild.

That will teach him to put his towers in the path of a terrorist attack.

You stupid ass! You tell me how someone gets away with putting up anything in downtown without complying with fire ordinances. How many folks died because of THAT?

Like a fire sprinkler was going to put out a 24,000 gallon jet fuel fire spread over how many floors?

I doubt a fire suppression system would have even worked after a JET crashing through the building severed most if not all the pipes.

What can be looked at is the lack of asbestos use above the 65th floor (believe it was 65) due to "environmentalism". Steel girders were not guarded against that extreme heat. How many folks died because of THAT?

You also have a point but we’ll never know, will we? The asbestos issue has been reviewed while haven’t heard a word about the lack of fire suppression equipment.

What I’m getting at is the NY/NJ Port authority properties have various sweetheart arrangements by which they can get around building codes.

When are they going to send the victims' families the bill for the rescue attempts?

None, I would guess. It was because these planes you know, sort of FLEW INTO the buildings and they collapsed. Sprinklers wouldn’t be enough.

Fire was the Achilles heel of the World Trade Center Twin Towers, for they did not have sufficient fireproofing nor fire-suppression systems. Designers of future skyscrapers may install retrofitted aqueous film-forming foam extinguishers, similar to those used for aviation fires, to enhance fire safety in future projects. In addition, new high rises may have plans that have more evacuation sites as well as possible external ways like giant escape tubes or parachutes (Ashley 2001). In the future, architects, engineers, designers, and builders will look to further the safety and security to all those in skyscrapers and learn from the events of September 11.

It certainly was not going to put out the burning aluminum. It takes hell to get aluminum to burn, but water is the last thing you want to try to use to put it out (think sodium).

The Twin Tower were built by the PA NY/NJ they are their own little world, THEY exempted themselves from the NYC Building Code and did not install the sprinkler system and fire proofing.

Silverstein bought the properties from the PA.

Please tell me that is just a very poor joke. The WTC had a sprinkler system, just as every commercial building. A sprinkler system is designed to put out normal fires. There is no fire suppression system designed that can put of an inferno created by tons of burning aviation jet fuel.

I hope you caught the sarcastic tone especially when reading my first response to his rediculous statement about the sprinklers. I thought of following up that the only way sprinlers would have put out that fire was to flush everything out the windows which would have included all of the people as well. The scene was ugly enough already with those who decided to take fate in their own hands rather than being roasted alive.

Maybe they can give that money to those ROP followers that are at the govt looking for a free lunch. Or maybe they can give it to the ACLU creeps that always have their hand out. Come on, the Govt needs its money to support its habit. Show a little understanding and kindness /sarc/
