Newspapers had a nice run from the 1970s to the 1990s. Unfortunately, as this chart from the Bureau of Labor Statistics makes clear -- by way of Marketwatch -- it's over.

Newspaper employment has utterly collapsed in the last 15 years, with employment numbers now around where they were in the mid-1950s.

The good news: It's a great opportunity. The next decade will give birth to new forms of reporting, more in tune with today's technology and news consumption habits.

This is very interesting. Did anyone ever consider that newspaper consumption plummeted starting in the early 90s and precipitously fell in the late 90s due to the emergence of the Internet?

Like I've said before, newspapers and newsmagazines will become the first victims of the de-massification of the media Alvin Toffler predicted back in 1980 when he wrote The Third Wave.

We’ve been doing these threads systematically for about four years now. Before that, GrampaDave and others would post whenever there was a layoff or bad news or cutbacks in the media.

I’ve loved ever minute of doing these postings and searching for the stories all over the web. It literally makes my day!

I’m 59 and have been a news junkie all my life. And all that time, I have prayed for the information stranglehold to be undone.

And now it has.

I thank God that he’s let me live long enough to see it happen and report on it.

craigs list has had a lot to do with the death, by removing the huge cash cow of classified adds from the news papers. kind of ironic really since craig is a huge lefty.

Absolutely. Classifieds were the meat and potatoes of newspaper’s revenue.

Do you have a chart showing local papers vs big city papers? I’m thinking local papers are not suffering as much, because local news isn’t covered by websites and wire services as much. Local papers have school sports, local ads, and other items that maintain readers. I get the local paper on thurs and sun. I like it. And anyway, my rabbits and guinea pigs need SOMETHING to crap on!

The big metro papers are hurting badly, but even the small community papers are ill. I posted a story last week in a thread about some community publisher (can’t recall the name) filing bankruptcy.

If you google the term fas-fax, that will bring up the circulation number that are published twice a year.

It could be that the reason the big papers seem in worse shape is that they had farther to fall. The small papers never grew exponentially like the big ones did.
