Malawi police have arrested and charged two homosexual men with "gross indecency" after the couple wed in the country's first same-sex public marriage ceremony over the weekend.
Davie Chingwalu, a police spokesman, told AFP the two men would "appear in court soon to answer charges of gross indecency". He added that police were still investigating the incident.
Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza were married in a traditional ceremony in southern Malawi on Saturday, attracting hundreds of curious onlookers.
Malawi's penal code outlaws homosexuality and sodomy, which is punishable by a maximum of 14 years in jail.
The government does, however, recognise the existence of homosexuals in Malawi and often calls on them to come out and help in the fight against the Aids pandemic.
Around 14 per cent of Malawi's 13 million citizens are infected with HIV. Aids has killed more than 800,000 people in the country since the first case was reported in 1985 and left more than a million orphans.

“were married in a traditional ceremony “
WHAT? The writer is a dope.
What do you bet Obama goes to war against Malawi, and Uganda becuase they outlaw homosexuality, and are in large part Christian (at least Malawi is I think)!
