WASHINGTON: US lawmakers favoured a compulsory full body scan of the passengers of all US-bound international flights so as to avoid the incident of a Nigerian national sneaking inside the plane with explosives.
"I would say right now we do need full body scan, especially when you have countries like Nigeria, which have inadequate security, and you have passengers transiting in Amsterdam and coming here," Congressman Peter King told CBS news in an interview.
"There is a brief violation of privacy with the full body scan, but on the other hand we can save thousands of lives," said King, a Republican Congressman, who is a Ranking Member of the House Committee of Homeland Security.
Senator Joe Lieberman, Chairman of Senate Committee on Homeland Security, strongly favoured full body scan.
"Three hundred people could have been killed and untold more on the ground in Michigan if this plane had crashed," Lieberman said referring to the explosive used by the Nigerian al-Qaida suspect in his attempt to blow up a US passenger plane on Christmas day.
"There have been privacy concerns expressed about the use of these whole body imaging devices, but I think those privacy concerns, have to fall in the face of the ability of these machines to detect material like this, explosive on this individual," he told Fox News in an interview.

Too Late! Already done dat!
Isn't the obamacare bill exactly that?
One more reason never to confuse "Republican" with "conservative." And one more reason to vote this treasonous scumbag into the unemployment line.
Or we could save a ton of money by banning Muslims from entering the country.
It’s not like we had open door policy for Germans and Japanese during WWII, ya know. (what is unique to the current situation is that a religion has, in essence, declared war on a culture and civilization)
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!
My eyes! My eyes! My poor, poor eyes!
(throws up now)
I presume they’ll only hire eunuchs to operate the scanners.
That would be a great idea for 'terrorist rehab'.
Let the authorities give all terror suspects a tranquilizer, then have an Arabic-speaking hypnotist standing by with a continuous-loop video of "The Best of Helen Thomas". The hypnotist will simply run the video for hours, narrating what will happen to the perp should he ever try to kill anyone...
We have a WINNER!
Yes, and best of all Helen the Hottie is an Arab herself (Lebanese, IIRC), so I’m sure they’ll be into her.
I’d rather see my wife go through the full body scan instead of getting felt up by the TSA goons.
Of course there will be a rule that only women can scan other women. It is obvious what type of women will be drawn to this type of work and will quickly be running the show.
Anyone notice that King is a “Republican Congressman” but Lieberman is just a “Senator”? Way to put the GOP on the wrong side of an issue!
What are the side effects of having ones body scanned? If someone is a frequent flyer then wouldn't that cause some concern?
I was coming back through Frankfurt 3 weeks ago and for whatever reason I set off the detector. The guy said I must have gone through it too slow or brushed the side. Anyway, I got the full pat down. The man, clearly gay, lingered a bit too long in certain places, mostly my feet. Reached up my pant legs, both sides, up and down several times, then my feet, almost a foot massage. I felt like going through the detector again! LOL. (and no, I'm not gay)
LOLOLOLOLOL
That clinches it. I'm not flying any more - and neither is my wife. Only hope now is to get a pilot's license. TSA is only about harassing the innocent.
U.S. Citizens Favour Lawmakers To Just STFU.
It was the Bush Administration that persuaded me to never fly commercially again.
In all fairness, I got fed up with the stupidity in 1992 under Clinton, but it was Bush that sealed the deal for me.
