Officials now say tragedy was only averted on Northwest flight 253 because a makeshift detonator failed to work properly. Share Man accused of attempt to blow up plane was sent on mission by terror leaders.
Bomb experts say there was more than enough explosive to bring down the Northwest jet, which had nearly 300 people aboard, had the detonator not failed, and the nation's outdated airport screening machines may need to be upgraded.

And rank politicization of national security nearly killed them.
The barney fife WH making excuses
Gol durn it, the press just has to stop changing their minds. They just got through telling me that only Janet Napolitano saved this airplane from disaster. Who needs a silly old detonator thingy when we have Janet from another Planet.
As for screening devices, Janet has saved us once again. The TSA has approved a device that would have easily detected this bomb. Its a millimeter wave radar system built by L3Com (They call it Provision). Its been tested to be far superior to the magnatometers currently in use. Oh wait, it seems that TSA has only a few in limited use in a few airports. It seems that a few people object because it can “see” underneath clothing and we don’t want to offend anyone.
Are you kidding me? Napalitano said the system worked?
There is an international Muslim conspiracy to kill Americans and Obama's team is doing nothing to stop it.
How's Zero's "no torture" policy looking now? How's it going to look if planes start dropping from the sky, one by one and the guy in captivity knows all about who is behind it?
[and the nation’s outdated airport screening machines may need to be upgraded.]
another reason to spend more money we don’t have.....geeeezzzzzz
I strongly suspect a SUCCESSFUL detonator and a similar amount of PETN. Just like richard reede, the shoe bomber (well, almost).
I flew out of Amsterdam, on Continental, a couple of years back, and Continental had additional screening for passengers on the flight to Houston.
Look behind you. See another Nigerian??? Check him for the “other WMD”.
Great, just great.
“Only a failed detonator”
....and I’d add the Grace of God.
bump: no passport
It's scary that they were able to do this, and while using someone described by other passengers as being obviously doped up on something.
SCARY.
I still have a nagging 'feeling' that something bigger is in the works, and I sure hope the LEOs catch it in time.
They have said since 911 that the screening machines needed to be replaced, yet they have only replaced the large airports.
Our freaking Homeland Protection is so predictably, it is no wonder that we haven’t had a thousand of these.
Only because the communication was better and the Terrorists were kept off balance in every country under Bush was this adverted.
The system worked per odumbos coconspirator
Evidently our security system relies on detonators failing.
This fails to reassure.
Are you talking about the head of Homeland Security?
The initial reports on Flt 800 actually identified the explosive as PETN and said that a device had been detonated over the empty fuel tank, thereby making the vapors explode. About a week later, those stories had disappeared and suddenly the fuel tank had just decided to blow up all by its lonesome.
Absolutely. God was watching over that flight!
