ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) - The 23-year-old man police say tried to blow up a Delta airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit has been arraigned in his hospital bed at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Action News reporter Peggy Agar and an Associated Press reporter were chosen to witness the arraignment. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has been charged with attempting to destroy an aircraft and placing a destructive device onboard an aircraft. The charges were filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in Detroit.
Investigators say the Nigerian flew from his home country to Amsterdam where he board the flight to Detroit with an explosive device attached to his leg. Witnesses say that during flight he went to the bathroom where he remained for about 20 minutes. It was after he returned, and during the flight's final approach to Metro, that witnesses reported hearing what sounded like firecrackers and smelled smoke.
The passengers than tackled Abdulmutallab and put out the small fire that the explosives had started. He was then restrained until he could be removed from the plane by law enforcement officials. According to federal investigators, a flight attendant asked what he had in his pocket after he was subdued. They say he replied an "explosive device." Abdulmutallab suffered burns to his legs. Several passengers were also injured.
Investigators with the FBI have analyzed the device used in the attack. They say it contained the high explosive Pentaerythritol tetranitrate, also known as PETN. This is the same explosive Richard Reid used in his attempt to blow up a plane using explosives hidden in his shoes in 2001.
In announcing the charges, US Attorney General Eric Holder said "This alleged attack on a U.S. airplane on Christmas Day shows that we must remain vigilant in the fight against terrorism at all times. Had this alleged plot to destroy an airplane been successful, scores of innocent people would have been killed or injured. We will continue to investigate this matter vigorously, and we will use all measures available to our government to ensure that anyone responsible for this attempted attack is brought to justice."
As a nurse in taking care of him, I would see to all his medical needs but I think I would have to tell him would a cowardly POS he is
Kwame Kilpatrick has been appointed his defense attorney.
UofM hospital uses leeches. I think this slimeball would enjoy a visit from several dozens of his cousins.
I say the coward chicken out! now lets take care of him like he has the rights we don’t have anymore~~~geez obozo sure us screwed us
I hope he’s getting not quite enough morphine to knock down the pain from those burns.
No charges of terrorism or the attempted murder of each individual on the plane? This is ridiculous!!!
” US Attorney General Eric Holder said “This alleged attack on a U.S. airplane on Christmas Day ——————”
Alleged attack? I’m speechless.
Another mind-numbingly dumb statement from our useless AG.
Pretty much what Bubba said after the first bombing of the NY Tower in 1993. And the two Embassy bombings...and the Cole...
They say it contained the high explosive Pentaerythritol tetranitrate....A sniffer is required to detect PETN....
Hi Roccus. You echo my thoughts exactly.
I give odds that as soon as the dust settles, true to form he will claim to be mentally ill. When Muslims get caught during terrorist acts, they will often claim a mentally ill defense, because that, while real mental illness is shunned in Muslim countries, *faking* mental illness to avoid punishment by infidels is seen as “crafty”.
While this might work in Europe, however, back in the 1960s in the US the mental illness defense was so overused that it is now terribly hard to prove. There is also the finding of “mentally ill but guilty”, that still puts them in prison.
He will find lots of friendlys in Ann Arbor..thats a university town....full of leftys....
In announcing the charges, US Attorney General Eric Holder said "This alleged attack on a U.S. airplane on Christmas Day shows that we must remain vigilant in the fight against terrorism at all times...."Also remain vigilant for new business for your Terrorist Defender law firm, hey Eric?
And how's that New York terror trial working out for you, Eric?
Islam is codified, institutional mental illness. When they admit to that, I’ll think about accepting mental illness as a defense.
Too bad its not the morgue....
Is he gonna get free health care too..because if he does, he should have to wait a year along with the rest of us
Come on give the guy a break, you act like no-one has ever mixed up viagra and PETN and thought they were supposed to use it by strapping it on next to their ding-a-ling.
