Travel Advisory (New flight restrictions announced in wake of Flt. 253 attack)
Air Canada ^ | Saturday, December 26, 2009

Posted on 12/26/2009 10:10:05 AM PST by kristinn

MONTREAL December 26, 2009 -- Air Canada advises passengers travelling to the U.S. that due to enhanced government security measures air travellers should arrive early at airports to allow extra time to clear security screening. Passengers should also expect flight delays, cancellations and missed connections, and limit themselves to a single piece of carry-on baggage.

Air Canada recommends passengers travelling to the U.S. to arrive early at the airport for their flight in order to allow adequate time for additional personal searches. Under new rules enacted by Transport Canada and the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, passengers and their carry-on baggage will be subject to full searches both at airport screening points and prior to boarding at the aircraft gate area.

As a result of the added security precautions, passengers should also expect delayed and cancelled flights as well as missed connections. Air Canada will endeavour to transport passengers to their destination as quickly as possible and rebook passengers who miss their connections at no charge. While these measures directly affect only flights from Canada to the United States, domestic and international flights may also experience delays due to airport congestion and delayed aircraft. For information on a flight's status please consult www.aircanada.com.

In addition, new rules imposed by Transport Canada will limit the amount of carry-on baggage to one item per person travelling on flights from Canada to the United States. Existing checked baggage rules remain in effect. For details on checked baggage allowances, please consult http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/baggage/index.html.

"The safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority at Air Canada," said Duncan Dee, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. "Our operations teams will be working closely with airport and government authorities to minimize any inconvenience to our customers and to ensure that our customers reach their destinations safely and comfortably."

New rules imposed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration also limit on-board activities by customers and crew in U.S. airspace that may adversely impact on-board service. Among other things, during the final hour of flight customers must remain seated, will not be allowed to access carry-on baggage, or have personal belongings or other items on their laps.

More information for customers on affected flights, including options for rebooking cancelled flights online and updates on delayed baggage tracking, is available at www.aircanada.com.

Most, if not all of these rules, will apply to all U.S. domestic and international flights.

The one-hour rule will keep people strapped to their seats for most flights of ninety minutes duration.

The searches at boarding gates are a new wrinkle.

They're being upfront that these new rules will wreck your travel schedule. Good luck.

That’s reassuring, isn’t it?

Now we can spend a trillion more on airport security so my wife and I can get frisked a couple of NEW ways when we are going to visit the grandkids.

This is pathetic.

Why not CUT the budget and focus on the likely suspects...frisking everyone is like a football team running a defense where they try to cover everyone in the STADIUM instead of the opposing players.

Nice play calling, Coach Bammy...

Thanks a lot! Another excuse for government control and spending another trillion that we don’t have.

The government is in the hands of foreigners and friends-of-terrorists. So when a terrorist strikes, the victim of any new government action is going to be the people, not the terrorists.

Eric Holder is a documented Defender of Terrorists.

And Barak Obama never saw a terrorist he didn’t want to go to church with.

Looks like I’ll be making heavy use of podcasts on my iPhone during the final hour of each flight. I read the rules as stating I can’t be holding a book or using my laptop. An hour is a long time!!

How long before each passenger is bound and gagged in their seat for the entire flight from take-off to landing following a comprehensive orifice examination?

Instead of taking a lesson from the success of El Al, the U.S. will instead adopt the liberal model: everyone suffers equal misery and humiliation, and if it still doesn't work, at least we will know we were 'fair'.

Hahahahaha...you don’t think they haven’t already thought of it, do you? If they didn’t actually put the guy on the plane...they’ll use any excuse to build up the size of their coup troops and control of our lives...

Why not CUT the budget and focus on the likely suspects...

You mean frisk all blacks? This guy could have passed as any black man and does not look like your typical terrorist.

Many terrorists have looked like hispanics...do you want to frisk them all?

The Uighars look asian, so anybody fitting that description needs to be checked.

Oh, Chechnyan terrorists look very caucasian....so we should frisk all whites.

If we do that, we are right back where we are today...everybody gets screened.

If you believe this enemy is a single race, you are as naive as most liberals.

GOOD GRIEF!!!

This is torture! What if somebody needs to go to the potty?

That is ridiculous!!!

I don’t fly much, thank God. But I know many who do.

So very sorry for them...this is just unbearable.

Naive I am not. Tell me something, how many of those you listed has been caught trying to blow up something in the US? Naive my ass...and I don’t recall any Uigher conspiracies in the news...and neither do you...but I know that my wife is not a real threat...lots of older white men women looking to bring down planes, you think? Thanks for reminding me about the liberal talking points, but I know the difference between a Mexican and an Arab...although, I guess there are “gubmint hires” in the airports that might not...Checnyan terrorists...shit.

Profiling works...

Naturally, these new measures will be "politically correct", I'm sure.

Here is the ironic problem with the new rules.

Had this terrorist injected the liquid into the PETN an hour before they landed, it would probably have exploded properly.

Instead it just fizzled and burned his legs, likely due to improper ‘mixing time’.

Why are you making it a racial issue?!! How about just looking thoroughly at anyone with a Muslim (Arabic) name? Instead of just waving them though.

The perp had the bomb strapped to his leg? How is this new rule going to help?

Why don't they just pass a rule that says "passengers must declare all bomb belts, bombs strapped to other body parts and bombs hidden inside body cavities"? That would be about as useful as the old questions they aske at the check-in counter -- "Did you pack your bag yourself? Has it been in your possession the whole time? Did a terrorist ask you to carry a bomb for him?"
