How al-Qaeda airline fiend used leg bomb and syringe

The man who tried to blow up a US airliner as it prepared to land at Detroit on Christmas Day had an explosive powder strapped to his leg which he tried to ignite by injecting chemicals with a syringe, Fox News reports.

The 23-year-old - named as al-Qaeda-linked Nigerian engineering student Abdul Mudallad (alters from earlier spelling of Mudallah) - failed in his bid to achieve a major blast, but succeeded in burning himself seriously and inflicting minor injuries on at least two other passengers seated nearby on Northwest Airlines Flight 253.

Passenger Syed Jafri, a US citizen who was seated three rows behind the Mudallad, told the Associated Press he saw a glow and noticed a smoke smell.

Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him (Mudallad). Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic.''

Another passenger said: "There was smoke and screaming and flames. It was scary''.

A spokeswoman for Northwest's parent company Delta said the flight, from Amsterdam, was carrying 278 passengers. They have been questioned by officials and their luggage - and the rest of the Airbus - has been screened for more explosives.....

All I need are 10 hours alone with him and a bag of salt.

Just imagine the fun you could have with those open burns

It said they striped his clothes off. Now that would have been prime time for the Steven Segal line ‘IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?”

All it takes is one guy to stop one of these idiots. You can go back to every single incident...and one guy who grasps all of these happenings...can stop the whole situation.

The hero passenger should be lauded all around the US, given the royal treatment... right... isn’t that happening?

A little bit of googling finds that there are at least two commercially-available binary explosives that fit the profile of what this guy was doing.

With both of them, you have a liquid component and a solid powder component, both inert until the two components are mixed. Once mixed, they can be set off with a blasting cap (which looks a lot like a firecracker).

Remember Arson detection class

Instructor took oxidizer (potassium permanganate) and
dropped glycerin on it. Ignited about 30 seconds later

Showed same thing with brake fluid and HTH (pool chlorine)

Plenty of common things work - dont need sodium or other
hard to procure metals

Even if the situation is more than one person can handle, it's worth making a move if it's something that has to be done. Many people are reluctant to make the first move, thinking they may be the only one to do something. But if someone else does something they will jump in. It does take the first person to act to get things going.

AQ has targeted Yemen for exploitation. It is another failed state, just like Afghanistan. A weak central government, with lots of moslem radicals.

Iran and AQ are using Yemen as a staging point for attacks against Saudi Arabia and, seemingly, the US.

As an aside, this guy was a Nigerian citizen. How did he get a visa?

I have no doubt that he's going to be sued by the "suspect." It's a shame that no interesting interrogation techniques will be used on him... I'll be his first words were, "I want to see my lawyer." Thanks Eric Holder and Obama!

Umaru Mutallab’s Son Identified as Delta Airline Attempted Bomber
• Father reported him to US Authorities six months ago
By Yusuph Olaniyonu, 12.26.2009

The young man, who yesterday night attempted to ignite an explosive device aboard a Delta Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan in the United States has been identified as Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old son of Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, former First Bank chairman. Mutallab, a former minister and prominent banker recently retired from the bank’s board.

The older Mutallab, as at the time of filing this report, had just left his Katsina hometown for Abuja to speak with security agencies, family sources say. According to the family members, Mutallab has been uncomfortable with the boy’s extreme religious views and had six months ago reported his activities to United States’ Embassy, Abuja and Nigerian security agencies.....

Burn extremely hot over tank fumes and there you have it...

The news reports the guy was sitting in row 19, right next to the wind (and wing fuel tanks).

Maybe the plan was to detonate over water so as to lessen the chance of recovering evidence?

From his holiday vacation in Hawaii, President Obama told security advisers "that all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel," White House spokesman Bill Burton told CNN.

Now I feel better.
