An al Qaida-linked suspect who allegedly tried to blow up a transatlantic plane is studying at a UK university, it has been reported.
The Nigerian is accused of trying to detonate a powdery substance on a plane from Amsterdam as it prepared to land at Detroit with 278 people on board.
US sources said he was subdued by passengers and has since claimed to have been acting for al Qaida.
He has been named by ABC News as Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, an engineering student at University College London, with the broadcaster citing US government documents.
The suspect, who has also been identified as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab in other reports, is currently under guard at a Michigan hospital.
He was flying from Nigeria to the United States for a religious ceremony according to his entry visa, ABC News said, which was issued on June 16 last year and valid until June 12, 2010.

What, exactly, are you trying to say??!!?
(you are excused if you are drunk or otherwise impaired, but if you are sane and sober, I want to know more about your brain function)
Abdul Farouk (Hot Pants) Abdulmutallab
GIVE UP ON THE DOMESTIC U.S. MEDIA WHEN IT COMES TO STORIES WITH AN INTERNATIONAL ANGLE WHICH ALSO HAS A DIMENSION OF SOMETHING THEY POLITICALLY DO NOT WANT TO REPORT ON, SUCH AS ISLAMIC-ORIGINED TERRORISM.
They are rigged, controlled and self-censored, so much so it is one big joke. Particularly CNN.
They are journalistically worthless and devoid of value to me and others who want the truth and want it timely.
Let is create a Class A, fact-based, worldwide, citizen-based, grassroots, conservative, independent information-gathering, verification and dissemenation mechanism here on Free Republic (Jim's dream) to eventually compete with these numbskulls in the US MSM out of jaded, hopelessly liberal J-schools in the insular US.
Another issue with today’s flight 253.
Landed at Detrot Metro, people being de-planed on the runway, per WJR radio.
WTF is going on?

That is coming from the terrorist himself. Yet Janet doesn’t seem to think there is an AQ connection. How does she know? The investigation has barely begun. For the first time in 9 years, I feel totally insecure. If explosives were smuggled onto a plane, how safe are we on commuter trains and subways? Just a matter of time....
I heard about this one as well. Apparently someone was holed up in a bathroom on the plane?
So long at the nitric acid was well sealed, and the container clean, I don’t think the components of PETN would be detected by an explosives sniffer. I’m not especially familiar with the ones used at airports, I’d presume they’re intentionally made somewhat less sensitive than the ones at secure facilities (e.g. nuclear power plants) for the sake of avoiding too many false hits among the increased traffic.
If he was mixing up PETN, then he was making an explosive, as opposed to some sort of incendiary as it appeared earlier. Mixing up PETN is like mixing up nitroglycerine in a lot of ways. It would have been tricky to manage without starting a fire if done one way, and without getting some really bad burns in another way. Especially in the confines of an airplane’s bathroom. But this guy probably wouldn’t have minded some burns if they didn’t keep him from doing what he wanted.
The ease of coming up with too many ways to create mayhem is why I think it’s a mistake to rely heavily on end-point security in fighting terrorism. It’s not enough to just try to stop them when they try something. They need to be convinced that doing things like this will only do them and theirs harm, and that if they want to get something they want they’ll have to do it in a peaceful way, as the alternative is unthinkable.

On local talk radio, and in the Detroit News, there is a couple that was in the Airport, they claim that the underwear bomber had help from a well dressed Indian gentalman.
When he said he didn’t have a passport, the Indian said he was Sudan. They were sent to a supervicer.
Just read the artical in the paper, no link to give. Any chance you could go to www.detnews.com to see if it’s still there? BTW, can’t post anything from them, just a link. FR would get in trouble.
Nobody ever thought Al-Qaeda was composed of Einsteins.
