Voter support for offshore oil drilling remains as strong as it was during last years presidential election, but many also continue to believe individual states should be able to stop it off their own coastlines.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 68% of U.S. voters believe offshore oil drilling should be allowed. Just 20% oppose drilling for oil off the coast of the United States, with another 12% undecided.
These numbers are virtually unchanged from findings just after Election Day in November 2008.
Republicans and voters not affiliated with either major party favor offshore drilling much more than Democrats.
...
Sixty percent (60%) of all voters say oil drilling should be allowed within 50 miles of the U.S. coastline. Of that number, 26% say drilling is okay just 12 miles out. Twelve percent (12%) favor drilling 100 miles off the shore, while 14% say it should be done more than 100 miles out.
GOP voters and those who are unaffiliated are much more likely than Democrats to favor drilling within 12 miles of the coast.
However, 48% of voters nationwide say individual states should have the right to ban drilling off their own coastlines. Thirty-four percent (34%) disagree and say states should not have this right. Seventeen percent (17%) arent sure.
Fifty-four percent (54%) of unaffiliateds and the plurality (48%) of Democrats say states should have the power to stop drilling off their own coasts. Republicans are more closely divided on the question.
Sixty percent (60%) of voters think it is at least somewhat likely that gas and oil prices will go down if the United States allows offshore oil drilling, including 33% who say its very likely. Thirty-one percent (31%) say its not very or not at all likely

Drill Gaia’s brains out.
OMG the jobs involved in just one platform....let alone a dozen!
Engineering, construction, manufacturing, trade and service...wow.
Thousands and thousands of solid, medium to high end jobs.
Not to mention the boost to the economy the extra energy would provide.
They would have gotten a bigger YES percentage if they had phrased the question more along these lines:
Do you approve of drilling for oil offshore, and stuffing Pelosi down one of the holes?
Liberalism is a cancer for this country.
Drill baby drill!
Gov does not drill - therefore, no private drilling. My bet is they give China the drilling rights.
As long as they give the Dems front money bet on it, and of course legislation that it could never be over turned in the future.
Drill baby Drill!
Typical. Most Americans support drilling for oil, so they went to the polls last fall and voted for the party that refuses to allow drilling.
Will they ever listen to Sarah? drill baby drill! We have lets get it!
drill baby drill.
Sarah is going to walk into office in 2012 at this rate.
Whether it is offshore onshore or on the moon we won’t become energy independent until the oil gas coal etc STAY in this country and not go on the world market
No Premier would rather waste a $Trillion on unicorn farts then letting oil companies drill w/their money.
Mary Christmas

We are never to be forgiven.
Didn't Bill Ayers write something called "Prairie Fire" in which 25 million Americans need to be killed? If so, why drill for oil and save Ami lives?
“A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 68% of U.S. voters believe offshore oil drilling should be allowed.”
Well, over 60% opposed healthcare deform, and we see how that’s working out...
The elitists gasbags in DC don’t give a rip what their constituents think, or what they want. Your royal Fed legislators are interested in only TWO things: Increasing their control of the US population, and winning reelection (forever).
It’s time to take back the country.
We can drill our way into prosperity and out of debt if we can vote out all the dimwits in Washington.
remember Obama filling the stadiums during the primaries? I bet he couldn’t fill a VFW Hall with anyone beside protestors now! ROFL
Meanwhile Palin is more popular than ever and could still fill stadiums.
Forget that Obama said the other day he now has shown that he has what it takes to make the HARD UNPOPULAR decisions.
What that means of course is that everything that is Beneficial to the United States Of America and popular with its citizens will not be Popular with The Marxist in the White House
