A 23-year-old Nigerian man tried to light a powdery substance aboard a Northwest Airlines flight before landing in Detroit on Friday, a senior U.S. counterterrorism official told NBC News.
Two people noticed the attempt and a third person jumped on the man and subdued him, an airline official told NBC News.
The man is being treated at the burn unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, officials said.
The man told investigators that he wanted to set off a bomb over the United States, and the incident is being handled as a possibile terrorism attack by both law enforcement and intelligence agencies, senior counterterrorism officials said.

The fbi and homeland security wil issue a report saying this incident was not terrorists related.
If the individuals that subdued him are not arrested and charged with a crime, they will be severely chastized and probably put on the no fly list.
The bomber acquired the device from Al Qaeda handlers in Yemen. It wasn’t an amateur effort. He was just stopped by vigilant crewmembers and passengers before he was able to detonate the main device.
My bet is Amish.
If the journalism degree came from Wal-Mart, I’d give him a lot more credit.
