GOP Should Be Looking For Mr. Right Now, Not Mr. Right
IBD's Capital Hill ^ | 12/24/2009 | Ed Carson

Rep. Jim Carney, D-Pa., says he’s rebuffed efforts by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to switch over to the GOP. Meanwhile, some seemingly tough Republicans plan to take him on next year. Or as one person told National Review’s Jim Geraghty, “We are more interested in beating Democrats than flipping them.”

It’s no surprise that Republicans would prefer a longtime Republican in office in 2011 over Carney or other potential party switchers. And in a normal year that might be the smart play. But right now the GOP needs just a few votes to block the Democratic health care plan, the biggest expansion of government in 40 years. A shaky new GOP member today may be worth five stalwart conservatives in 2011.

Consider this: If Sen. Specter were still a Republican, would he still have voted "yea" for the Senate health bill?

Flipped Dems aren’t reliable. They will let us down at a crucial time, at a crucial vote.

How disappointing!!!

Here we go with "The Politics Of Expediency" once again!!!

I've been enjoying the fabulous editorials of IBD for some time now, but this one just drives me up the wall.

Considerate Conservatives, if properly funded by business, industry and the majority of "Considerate Conservatives" in this country, will win everytime it's given a serious try!!!

Especially if those gawdawful churchy conservatives get throw in with the program like they did with Reagan!!!

Yes. In a minute. And if HE hadn’t got them to 60, Snowe or Collins would have.

They needed to flip somebody before Nelson caved. And then somebody else, to get the dominoes falling.

He would have voted whichever way he thought the wind was blowing. His caving in to Reid is more likely to help than hurt him come next November.

I guess someone named Carney is more appropriate in the Democrat caucus anyway.

Yeah, you notice Sen Grahamnesty is on the resuscitation tour, lately? Not long ago, he was on O’Reilly Factor with Laura Ingraham subbing for Bill. Sen. Lesbian Grahamnesty was critiquing weak spined Democrats as an expert witness. Curiously, Laura didn’t question his own pattern of betrayal. Conservatives have to make clear that Newt, and Sen. Grahamnesty are dog meat.
