The Dems' political payoff (The Dems think strategically, the GOP think tactically)
Powerline ^ | 12/22/2009 | Scott Johnson

I think that a lot of congressional Democrats are going to pay the price of Obamacare, but Andrew McCarthy highlights a key point:

The best thing about Mark Steyn's guest-host stint on Hannity last night -- other than Jonah's joining him on the panel -- was that Mark asked some pointed questions of two brilliant political strategists, Dick Morris and Karl Rove, that seemed rooted in Mark's theory that, on health care and all it entails,"The Dems are thinking strategically; the Republicans are all tactics."

For my money, I think the theory is being borne out: Democrats have their eyes on a different end-game than our guys do: namely, the establishment of permanent, European-style socialism in the U.S. Our guys are focused on converting Obama radicalism into big-time electoral success in the next election cycle. The Dems have already factored in that likelihood and are betting -- over the long haul -- that even if the GOP cuts deeply into Dem majorities or takes over Congress (and even takes over the White House in 2012), Republicans will lack the commitment (and perhaps the numbers) to roll back what the Left is accomplishing now.

That is, our guys are focused myopically on a battle the Democrats have already figured they can afford to lose. The real battle is: What do you do when you get back in power? Do you have a plan for how to undo what is being done? Do you frame the coming elections in a way that converts victory into a mandate not only to stop what Obama is doing but to undo what he has done?

I'm hearing a lot from our side about making big gains in the upcoming elections. That's not strategy or victory. You have to have a plan for what those gains would translate into. Democrats, by contrast, have a real plan for how what they're doing today will sustain Big Government, and themselves, over the long term, regardless of occasional electoral losses.

PAUL adds: I don't think the Democrats will accomplish enough "European-style socialism" through the health care legislation that's likely to pass to make a series of political thumpings worth the price. My guess is that the Dems are betting that the economy will improve enough to prevent their political setbacks from being severe.

Indeed. The Left never loses, just suffers setbacks.

Actually, it’s so think I think you’d need a chainsaw or cutting torch.

Good points, well said.

Nope, no one. The left are socialists, the right are globalists. Neither works to the benefit of American sovereignty or self-determination.

Bingo! Bears repeating:

“There is a third strategy. It is the strategy of manufactured crisis. Intentional destruction of Capitalism by bankrupting the USA. Of course there are no winners there but putting the pieces together would make socialism a much easier sell.”

Obama’s chief of staff Rahm Emanuel actually came out and said basically that in terms of how to leverage a crisis. Was in a talk to the WSJ in Nov 2008. He didn’t include the part about manufacturing the crisis, but it’s clear that is what they are doing.

This is just like when Iran says it will wipe Israel off the planet while trying to build nukes. They don’t include an outright admission that they are building nukes, but it’s clear that is what they are doing.

When your enemies actually state their intentions, and their actions match, it is a good idea to pay attention!

(I actually wrote about this on a blog, but don’t want to blogpimp.)

Exactly. All anyone has to do see the truth of what you say, is to look at the whole history of government in the 20th century-the trend is bigger socialised government and the creation of large government-dependent voting blocs. The only thing the right has held onto, so far in the overall picture, are our Second Amendment rights, and the left is chiseling away at that as fast as they can.

Its going to take 60 votes in the Senate to roll back anything. Sadly there won’t be 60 strong conservative GOP senators anytime soon....

Neither party has any plans to deal with no jobs and no money.

the mini-minds that created the problem are not capable of seeing, finding, or proposing a viable solution.

the ONLY viable solution disembowels the federal government as we know it.

The Dems don’t care if they lose seats or even the majority as long as the Republicans don’t gain enough seats to give them 60 in the Senate. At that point they hold their minority together and kill every bill by cloture. the 60/40 Republican majority is a slim possibility especially with a leftist media.

One thing we need to take into account-In the 2012 cycle the dems will be defending 25 or 26 senate seats to the pubs 7 or 8! That’s a huge burden for them and a great opportunity for us!!

“the ONLY viable solution disembowels the federal government as we know it.”

Ergo, that must be the strategy. If not for the Pubbies, then for Patriots.

Of course. The GOP is afraid of its own shadow.

Yes.

So ...

Put Mark Steyn in charge.

I get the feeling that he is not afraid of his own shadow.

Or Glenn Beck.

By nature, conservatism is all about the preservation of liberty. It is by nature a defensive struggle. For conservatives, liberty is embodied by the principles outlined in our Constitution. Over the past 200+ years, the US Constitution has stood the test of time as the world’s premier defense against tyranny. We cannot devise a better political document.
We need to strenuously assert our God given Constitutional rights and oppose this health care bill. We must pass state legislation and state constitutional amendments that prohibit mandates and allow people to buy health insurance according to laws of OUR STATES. We must use every rational legal technique to oppose the bill.
In 2010, we must make a mighty effort to take back the US House. This will give us committee chairs with the power to investigate Obama’s ties to ACORN, climate-gate, the firing of IG Walpin, Chrysler bond-holder takings, misuse of TARP funds, pay czars etc.
In 2012, we must elect a Republican president that REFUSES to administer and enforce the unconstitutional federal health care law.
The sleeping giant has awakened. We have only begun to fight!

Here's one tactic that the Democrats cannot afford to lose. It's likely to be the keystone, without which their entire strategy falls apart.

The Republicans must take back the Senate in 2010 to prevent Obama from packing the Supreme Court with his radical picks.

It will be easier for the Republicans to roll back the Democrats' socialist agenda if they can get the Supreme Court to back their efforts citing the unconstitutional nature of the Democrat regulations on Americans.

Without control of the Senate in 2010, I expect Obama to name one or two more Justices before his term ends.
